Stargirl: The Lost Children #3 unveils and deepens the mystery behind Orphan Island when Stargirl finds the missing sidekicks, and a new kid arrives to make things infinitely more complicated.
Is It Good?
Yes, Stargirl: The Lost Children #3 is excellent, and Geoff Johns is proving that he's authoring one of the most intriguing mystery stories from DC. This comic is an excellent choice if you're looking for a fun adventure mystery (that isn't Batman).
When last we left Stargirl and her friends, Emiko got captured by the Childminder, and Stargirl managed to escape with a pack of long-missing sidekicks, including Wing, Cherry Bomb, and Air Wave. Now, we learn more about Childminder through Emiko's imprisonment, we find out what happened to the rest of the sidekicks. Two intriguing developments keep the mystery going now that the sidekicks have been found.
In other words, Geoff Johns is stringing readers along but doing it the right way. When one part of the mystery resolves, another presents itself to keep you hooked, to keep you invested in what happens next. Regular readers have heard me repeatedly lecture about the value of getting readers to ask the "right questions" within a story as a hook. This issue gets you to ask all the "right questions."
Overall, this is a fun issue. The technical execution of the script is phenomenal. The pacing and dialog are on-point, the cameos from a whole host of Silver Age sidekicks are cool, and the twist reveals are immensely satisfying.
Combine the stellar writing with Nauck's exquisite art, and this is (or at least should be) one of the top DC titles.

Bits and Pieces:
Stargirl: The Lost Children #3 nails the fun and excitement of a sidekick-centered mystery. Several plot points from the previous issue get resolved while an equal amount more present themselves to keep you entertained and curious about what happens next.

ReplyDeleteIt feels like World's Finest is the DC title getting all the accolades these days, but IMO, THIS gets my vote for the best title DC is publishing today. It's the only Big Two title where I immediately want to read the next issue--and it's been years since I've felt that way with anything put out by those companies. Todd Nauck is doing stellar, boss-level artwork here too!
