The Looming Darkness
Our Dark Crisis has gotten bigger and that's just not because of the name extension. In our previous issue, we saw Titans Tower under siege by Deathstroke and his Secret Society and even though we have two generations of Titans and an entire Academy, they were no match to the Darkness that is infused in Slade Wilson. Thankfully, or sadly, depending where you land on it, no one died in this incursion, and Superman, Jon Kent was able to show up in time to help save the day. Not only that though, but deep in space, we see the Green Lanterns are getting their act together by finding the missing Corps members, and thankfully the lot went and found the greatest among them, Kyle Rayner. So the Justice League is dead, and the Titans have been dismantled, but maybe there's still hope with Jon Kent's new Justice League and a Green Lantern Corps that's getting into the game. Let's jump into this issue and find out.
While the previous issue spent its time really just showing us the siege of Titans Tower, this issue just really opens things up to show us that this is indeed a Crisis and everyone is going to have to deal with it. It's just too bad that after Deathstroke's attack, the Titans seem to be down for the count for now...... and it is interesting to see that while Beast Boy didn't die at the end of the first issue, we do see that there's some kind of lingering damage that Garfield is going to have to deal with. Really though, it's all hands on deck because of Deathstroke and the Secret Society's plan to create a Crisis for Pariah and take out anyone trying to be a hero and with that, we get Green Lanterns, the JSA, the new Justice League and possibly the end of that team as well because now that things are ramping up, it just might be too much and it might possibly give us a return to Black Adam being a heel because he's getting kind of upset with how big everything has become and his fellow heroes refusing to kill to put a stop to it.
Besides the added characters in this issue, we also have added elements that make this finally feel like a proper Crisis because while the majority of our heroes are dealing with what they can on Earth, the Green Lantern Corps are doing some out-of-the-box thinking and going down the avenue of trying to find Nekron because of what Black Adam told our heroes about Pariah's army, and this path leads Hal Jordan, Jo Mullein and Kyle Rayner down a crazy Black Lantern path that I can't wait to continue. If that wasn't enough to up the ante with what we're dealing with, it looks like certain characters are remembering who saved the day during Forever Evil and who stepped up there when the Justice League was destroyed.
All in all, this issue of Dark Crisis has really brought the feeling of an event that the previous issues failed to bring, and at this point, I can finally feel like we're into something that might shake the DC Universe. The characters are here, the multiple missions are here and it looks like we might have changes in characters that will alter what we know about the comics we love long after this event is finished. With all that going on, we also have great art throughout and colors that pop, which is a must when you have the Green Lanterns involved. Hopefully, this issue is the start of great things to come because even though we're picking up momentum with this issue, with Pariah still waiting in the wings with his Great Darkness army, I still have a fear that the overall threat will just be all talk and if that's the case this "sequel" to Crisis on Infinite Earths is going to be suffering from a real failure to launch.
Bits and Pieces:
Everything ramps up this issue as more situations, characters, and drama take us on a journey into the dark where hopefully our heroes can overcome instead of unraveling..... but with some of the interactions here, it looks like many won't be able to deal with being a superhero after this event is over. We've got great art throughout and a cliffhanger that I can't wait to get back to. Thankfully, Dark Crisis finally feels like it's begun.
Great review. Lot of Great Moments in this one. The Justice Society reveal. The Legion of Doom reveal. The Black Lantern reveal. So that's totally Lian suiting up isn't either her or Sin given how crazy continuity is lately with including old stuff. I'm going to solicitation is calling that character Red Canary so Maybe it's not Lian since she currently has a code name already. But we'll see.
