I am a Dan Jurgens fan and love getting a Blue and Gold mini-series from him and Ryan Sook. That said, I thought the first issue was a bit down, and while it had some fun and feels, I hope we get more story and character work for both characters. Do we start getting that this month? Let's find out...
The issue begins with a very cinematic cold open that might have overstayed its welcome just a bit but does get everyone in the Blue and Gold mood. This issue is full of in-jokes and references, and with Booster involved, marketing opportunities as well. I will make the call right now; Eric Shea would love to get his hands on a Todd Mcfarlane Bettle Buggy!
The biggest takeaway from the first issue was that Ted loves Booster and would do anything for his buddy. As we advance, we will have to see if Booster is a gem because this issue is about pulling Ted down to the point of ruin. By the end of the issue, Ted has nothing except Booster, and I'm worried about that.
As far as Booster goes, though, everything is great! He is hitting on social media and is a man with a plan... it's just that his plan kind of stinks and relies on Ted to have things like money, and tech, and more money!
The issue is action-packed from the beginning scene to a massive fight in the book's middle act, and everything looks great. I like Ryan Sook's character design work the most, but everything else keeps pace as well.
While I could do without the social media pop-up conversations, I had fun with this issue and the stuff with Ted Kord, while heartbreaking, was well done. Dan Jurgens pulls in some New 52 continuity while also referencing the craziness of the recent Tom Taylor Suicide Squad book.
Bits and Pieces:
While I still want a more significant overall story to get going, Dan Jurgens does some considerable character work with Ted Kord while keeping the fun going with Booster Gold. It's all likely to come to a head real soon, and I will be there to see what happens.
7.5/10
