Batman: Gotham Nights #6 Review

The OG is OOC

Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic, Jonathan Glapion, Ivan Placencia, and Tom Napolitano
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: May 26, 2020

Mark Russell is back with another Gotham Nights story, and while I haven't loved his stuff so far, it has been far from terrible.  That may not sound like a compliment, but nowadays, it is.  To me, this issue is the most "Mark Russell" one so far, so let's see how it is, shall we?

Art by: Inaki Miranda. John Kalisz, and Travis Lanham
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: May 27, 2020

A Gail Simone Birds of Prey story hitting the Digital First Lineup?  Yes Please!  I have been keeping up with most of DC's digital line of books and have been enjoying Simone's Flash stories, but Birds of Prey is another level entirely!  She is my favorite Birds writer, but I think I may be hyping this way too much already!  I better just get to my review, and away we go...

Supergirl #41 Review and *SPOILERS*

You Ever Fight a Hurricane in the Pale Moonlight?

Written By: Jody Houser
Art By: Rachael Stott, Cris Peter
Letters By: Tom Napolitano
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 26, 2020

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

We finally have the return of the perennial crossover companion book, which is occasionally referred to as Supergirl. Coming out of it’s most recent crossover run, Supergirl finally starts it’s own story once again (for those taking bets, I give it four issues before we get bitten by the crossover bug again) and they’ve made a choice that gives me a little pause. Houser has taken over the book going forward and I wasn’t a huge fan of the crossover story that she told. That being said, I think any writer would struggle heavily when they are given so little creative freedom in a crossover event. Thus, I think it would be unfair to hold any of the previous issues against her, and instead, I hope that going forward we will end this mess with an entertaining story. However, that won’t be determined until we can read the story ourselves so, let’s jump into the latest story and see how things go.

The Terrifics #27 Review

The Council of Spheres

Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Sergio Davila, Vicente Cifuentes, Protobunker and Tom Napolitano
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 26, 2020

Most people know that Terrifics is ending with #30 and that this is the last print issue before it finishes up as a Digital-Only title.  It's a shame because Gene Luan Yang has done an excellent job on the book since taking over from Jeff Lemire, but it did outlive all the other New Age of Heroes books.  So does the book continue to be a good read for its stretch run?  Let's find out...

The Flash #754 Review and *SPOILERS*

Speed of Talk

Written By: Joshua Williamson
Art By: Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, Hi-Fi
Letters By: Steve Wands
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 26, 2020

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

If I had to sum up the latest story arc in a simple word it would be: bland. It’s perfectly serviceable and middle-of-the-road. However, there really isn’t anything about it that makes me really want to read more. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. At the end of the previous issue, we saw a heart-wrenching scene that eventually led to a team-up between Flash and his greatest villain, Reverse-Flash. Since Reverse Flash is the only one that can defeat the new villain Paradox, Flash was left with no choice. This has immediately introduced some much-needed intrigue into this book and perhaps it will lead to a much more entertaining story. However, we will not know until we are able to read what comes next so let’s jump into the latest issue and see where this story takes us.

The Terrifics #26 Review

Never Trust the Hype Man

Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Sergio Davila, Vicente Cifuentes, and Protobunker
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: March 11, 2020

While I wasn't a big fan of the Terrifics when Jeff Lemire was writing it as a partial spoof of the Fantastic Four, I did like the roster a bunch.  So, when Gene Luen Yang jumped on, I was excited about what he would do.  Of course, the Year of the Villain stuff, while good, didn't feel like he was getting to tell his own story.  Since then, however, things have been interesting, and the "choose your own adventure" #25 had that charm that I love from Yang.  Unfortunately, the book is ending at issue #30, but we still have a couple of issues to tie things up, at least.   So, is this issue a good start to the end?   Let's find out...

Release Date: May 27, 2020

I have enjoyed Tom Taylor's short time on this book so far and can't figure out why it's not selling more.  While I think the shutdown might kill other books momentums, I hope it might kickstart this one a bit.  I'm not sure how or why that would happen, but a guy can have his hopes and dreams, right?  Well, maybe a kickass issue will do the trick.  Is this that issue?  Let's find out...

Flash: Fastest Man Alive #5 Review

Air Guitar (Almost) Included

Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Clayton Henry
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: May 20, 2020

Gail Simone has been giving Flash fans the most serialized story of these Digital First books, and I have been enjoying it.  It has been fun, exciting, and feels both classic and fresh at the same time.   I can see why DC Comics had this one in the Walmart 100-page Giant since it's a cool way to get new readers into the Flash.  While some of the other stories have had a rough transition from Walmart to Digital-First, Gail Simone's story keeps racing along, standing tall against the "real" books as they hit the shelves.  Does this finale keep pace?  Let's find out...

Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace #5 Review

The Truth...

This issue of Wonder Woman Agent of Peace is an odd one.  Two stories for the price of one and the cost of one is still only 99 cents!  So, do you get a double bang for your buck here?  Let's find out...

Aquaman: Deep Dives #5 Review

Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: May 20, 2020

Steve Orlando jumps back on the Aquaman Digital-First Trolley to start up a serialized story that he set up a few weeks back.  I'd love to say that the Sea Devils are what has me excited about all of this, but I can't fake the funk, I'm mostly here for V Ken Marion's art!  Yep, I am a fanboy through and through, and you can take that as a disclaimer, a proclamation, or whatever.  Now that's out of the way, how is the issue?  Let's find out...
