Dr. Fate #1 (1988) Review

"THE RETURN OF DR. FATE"

Writer: J.M. DeMatteis
Penciller: Shawn McManus
Inker: Mark McKenna
Cover Price: $1.25
Release Date: October 11th, 1988

Review by Joey Casco of TheWineStalker.net

In the 4-part miniseries that precedes this on-going title, Kent Nelson died and Nabu inhabits Kent's corpse in order to guide Eric and Linda Strauss, who merge together to become the new Dr. Fate. Eric is in control while Linda hangs out somewhere in there, kinda like a Firestorm deal.

This run gets really weird, and it's not just because Linda is Eric's step-mother and she wants to bump uglies with him. Magic, demons, THE DRACULAS!!! DeMatteis' Dr. Fate is mostly fun, sometimes disturbing, and just effed up! So I'm gonna go ahead and review the first arc.

This issue begins with a mysterious man in a mansion. He keeps saying that he's "the old one", and states "there's no one on this earth more tired than me". But that wraps around at the end of the issue, so how about we start this review by summoning some demons?

Art By: Howard Porter, Hi-Fi
Letters By: Steve Wands
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: June 25, 2019

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It’s no secret that I am not the biggest fan of this Year One storyline that we are currently in the midst of. It hasn’t added much of anything to the Flash mythos and the most interesting parts were thrown away almost immediately. That being said, there was a glimmer of hope in the previous issue. Sure we were still going through the Greatest Hits but I found myself very entertained by an issue that had injected fun into its’ story. The storyline is still fundamentally flawed but when you make an issue fun, it can become very easy to ignore those flaws. I’m hoping that we get more of that. I’m not enjoying the actual storyline all that much right now but if you can make these repeated scenarios fun for the reader, this book might just turn things around. Let’s just jump in and see where this issue takes us.

Batman Beyond #33 Review

False Positive

Written By: Dan Jurgens
Art By: Rick Leonardi, Ande Parks, Chris Sotomayor, Travis Lanham
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: June 26, 2019

It's time to jump into the future, where we'll pick up on our False Face and The Splitt story line, where previously we saw our future Batman getting his ass handed to him by this fusion thief..... who's also a speedster...... what a weird villain.... I dig it though because I'm all about new villains in this future of Gotham City.  Besides the Splitt and his scavenger hunt throughout Neo Gotham, we also have Bruce Wayne acting a bit weird and by weird I mean he's acting like he's been replaced by a nut in Arkham who's called False Face.  Let's jump into this issue and see if our future Bat Family can put the pieces together and realize that their mentor isn't who he says he is.  Let's check it out.

It's time to get Dark in here as we jump into another installment of the Justice League Dark, where we previously saw the majority of the magical wielders in the DCU held captive by the Lords of Order.  Their only options, die or have their magic and all memories of magic taken away from them.  Not much of a choice really, but for some it seemed like the only way out.  Thankfully, we also saw Wonder Woman and Zatanna confront Mordru in an attempt to get the power to fight against these so-called Lords of Order and with Mordru's magic and the Ruby of Life, we saw these two heroes transformed into the new Lords of Chaos.  Hopefully this new aspect will allow our heroes to turn the tide of battle.  Let's jump into this issue and check it out.
