That witchy war is upon us! Hitch your britches when’s a-comin’ the
witches! You got to pick up every stitch! And so forth. Check out my review of
Justice League Dark #16, as follows!
Explain It!
Now that her diabolical Luthor-inspired plan is happening (as
planned), Circe has turned into steampunk Firestorm and holds Wonder Woman in
an in-between dimension, in her thrall. She needs Diana to scratch herself with
the Black Diamond, and then Circe seems to think she gets Eclipso power or
something? That’s not normally how it works…I think Eclipso is working some
scheme from behind the scenes. Anyway, Circe spends a lot of this issue
belching out some exposition about how, a long time ago, she tricked Hecate
(former Goddess of Magic) into ceding some of her power or something? I don’t
see how its relevant now, considering Circe has Hecate’s power all up in her
witch mark or whatever. It like crowing about a free six-pack of beer after you’ve
robbed a convenience store.
Unfortunately, this is about all that happens in the entire issue.
The art team absolutely rules the day, depicting other dimensions and the
enthusiasm of a chimpanzee and Wonder Woman in the limbo zone in amazing and
interesting ways that you will want to pore over. Constantine is advised that
his pal Swamp Thing has been reduced to a bit of refrigerator mold by Jason
Woodrue. And the Legion of Doom symbol lights up the sky over the Swamp, which
we might have guessed would happen. It is a Year
of the Villain tie-in, after all,
Bits and Pieces:
Lushly illustrated pages and the subtle raising of stakes are
obliterated by a dense story full of contrivances and conveniences. Maybe the
thing that’s supposed to happen will happen in the next issue.
6/10
