Hawkman is in the fight of his life as his past has caught up to him in the form of his former partner in his first life, Idamm and his army of Deathbringers. Previously, we saw Hawkman discover the ultimate weapon to combat this threat and to his amazement...... it was him. More accurately, it was every version of him that was brought from time and space to aid him in his fight. Let's jump into this issue and see if this new ability for Hawkman...... which I bet we'll never see again can turn the tide of war or if it's just too little too late. Let's check it out.
If you've been following Hawkman from the beginning........ or even if you've just been following from midway through, you can pretty much predict what's going to happen in this issue as we prepare to get to that twelfth issue to fill out the trade and finish up this arc. Without getting spoiler-y, you have a lot of filler. That being said, it's still fun to see all of these different versions of Hawkman battle the immense Deathbringer army.
Like previously, while there isn't much to this issue, there's still enough to keep things interesting to the point where you want to keep reading to see what will happen next, but even with my enjoyment from the many Hawkmen........ there's still bits to this that don't make sense. Like why the version from the Microverse isn't just a Hawkman from the Microverse, but someone who seems to have Ray Palmer technology or why a version of our current Hawkman from Dark Nights: Metal is here when it's just our current Hawkman with a different look. Yeah, this aspect to the story isn't perfect, but it seems like Venditti was going for fun more than anything else.
All in all, the art remains great and the Hawkmen are cool, but what we get out of book that progresses our story is essentially Carter saying that good is better than evil...... until he finds out he's wrong because we find out that Idamm and the Deathbringers have a power he didn't know about. With that though, we pretty much know nothing about the Deathbringers or their Void God so the reveal doesn't mean much because it literally could have been anything and since we know so little, none of it had to make sense. There's still enjoyable parts and I can't wait to see how it all ties up next issue, but as of right now I'm just remaining underwhelmed with what we're getting out of a book that has an uphill battle coming right out of the gate just because it's called Hawkman. Hopefully that changes though.
Bits and Pieces:
You'll get some pretty fun Hawkman and Hawkmen action this issue with beautiful art all throughout, but what you won't get is much progression to the story beyond a reveal that came out of nowhere and doesn't really mean much for what we know of the character. It's pretty standard stuff for this series though so if you've been enjoying this far, there's no reason you won't enjoy this.
6.3/10
