Days Of Hate #5 Review

Every Picture Tells a Story

Written by Ales Kot
Drawn by Danijel Zezelj
Colored by Jordie Bellaire

Reviewed by: Andrew McAvoy

This is a book that has stayed consistently good through its four issues up to now. One mild concern that I have had with it is that it is a very dark book in both story and appearance. In fact, I think that the pages are a little too hard to make out at times due to the vast swathes of black silhouette. Anyway, the last issue left us on tender hooks as we saw Huan seemingly turn informant (like Eric Shea she informed) on her former partner Amanda.

Delta 13 #1 Review

Unlucky 13

Writer: Steve Niles
Artist: Nat Jones
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Release Date: May 23, 2018
Cover Price: $3.99

I was really looking to forward to reading this one as it appeared to appeal to my sci-fi tendencies,
sadly though I was left with a comic of where I was trying to work out which character was which, a
dull color palette with a not so compelling story, which I will try unpick.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Urban Legends #1 Review

Colorized in a Half Shell

Writer: Gary Carlson
Artist: Frank Fosco
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Release Date: May 23, 2018
Cover Price: $3.99

Review by: Ron Freilich

“Urban Legends” is the latest Turtle offering from IDW and is unique in that it reprints an older ongoing TNMT series originally published by Image Comics back in 1996.
The series was originally simply titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, published in black and white and ran for 23 issues before being canceled and unfortunately was never completed.
What makes this reissue campaign different is that the series isn’t being collected into a trade paperback or a hardcover right out of the gate but is instead being re-released in its entirety in a single issue format on a monthly basis, but this time is done in full color!  The plan here is to re-release all 23 original issues, and then to finally finish out the series with 3 additional brand new issues by the original creative team some twenty plus years later!

Star Trek: Discovery: Succession #2 Review

Warp Speed

Writer: Mike Johnson, Kirsten BeyerArtist: Angel HernandezPublisher: IDW PublishingRelease Date: May 23, 2018Cover Price: $3.99Review by: Joey Galvez

Ok so I’ve been a horrible Trekkie and haven't seen any episodes of Star Trek Discovery, but reading Star Trek Discovery Succession has sparked my interest. Writers Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson do a very good job in bringing me up to speed.  This issue takes place after season #1 and the U.S.S Discovery has returned to their original timeline one year later. The imperial flagship Charon has been destroyed by rebels and Emperor Georgiou is believed to be dead.

I review off digital files but I usually buy the books I like on New Comic Book Day so that I can own a hard copy. The first issue of this series was remarkably hard to get my hands on, and I managed to scoop up a copy before the price went way up.

Every time I read this book I get my expectations subverted. Not in a Rian Johnson way...in a good way! I always think its going to go in one direction and then it hauls me in a different one. That suggests to me that the final spectrum of this series is going to be very wide, and it could hit a very high issue count. That excites me as it makes me think this could be a cartel-alien equivalent of The Wire. Let's go down in the hole and see what this issue was all about.

And now the end is near, and so I face the final bloodbath. Yes, fancy an adventure set in Columbia that makes jokes about Soviet weaponry and has more violence in one book than the entirety of Netflix's Narcos series? Well then I have the very book for you, come hither and I'll share with you the secret of combining side splitting hilarity with ultra-violence...

Chris and Reggie's Cosmic Treadmill ep. 91 - Groo the Wanderer #1 (1982)

Gag Barbarian

What ho, fair comics enthusiasts! In this episode, professional barbarians Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) indulge their wanderlust when they read Sergio Aragones' Groo the Wanderer #1, published by Pacific Comics in 1982! After a bio on Sergio and the issue's "translator" Mark Evanier, they dive right into the fray of the first issue, detailing every page. After a break, they come back to wrap up the info about the creators, then tell the history of Pacific Comics. Plus, a little etymology lesson on the word "barbarian!" All this, and a couple of nice reviews found on Stitcher. This episode is more fun than a tankard of mead, you don't want to miss it!

DC Comics Best Covers of the Week: May 23, 2018

A Variance in Story

I'm gonna start off this week comparing two covers that, in conjunction, made me chuckle. They're not altogether bad covers on their own, but I've included them as Honorable Mentions because I felt like it. So this week, you get SEVEN covers on the list instead of just five! Everyone knows only the top three matter anyway, though. Let's get to it!

Motherlands #5 Review

We're The Top Dogs, Dummy

Written by: Si Spurrier
Art by: Rachael Stott, Felipe Sobreiro, and Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 23, 2018

Well, here we are, another month and another issue of this series. After four disappointing issues, I am nowhere near excited to jump into this one. While I still bank on the concept being really cool, we never get to see any of these new and different "strings" anymore, and instead, have resigned to more and more boring conflict between mother and daughter. Every time the two seem to be getting along a little bit more, it gets ripped out from under them and they start over in the next issue. I find this series a chore to get through, and I'm not really looking forward to digging into this issue, but let's give it a shot.

Having made the choice not to have children, I can’t help but be suspicious of those that have. I mean, it’s categorically proven that dogs are better than children. So what are these people playing at? Worst of all, a lot of these folks would pervert justice and society just for the favor of their smelly offspring. Don’t believe me? The royal wedding…or a royal wedding, at least, happened this past weekend, and I was alarmed to find out that more Americans watched it on television than British people. I guess ceremonial pomp and circumstance is old hat in the United Kingdom, what with their changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace and Interring of the Youngest Duke in the walls of the Castle of London being common, regularly-occurring events. I wonder how John Constantine would have handled it? I imagine he’d smoke a Silk Cut in church and be summarily kicked out. Let’s see what he’s up to now, in The Hellblazer #22, my review for which commences below!

You know, when we left last issue with Batgirl figuring out that she was caught in some kind of recursive loop inside her mind, I sort of thought that was it for the story: she figured out the problem, and it was therefore a matter of time before she broke out of her mental funk and saved the day. Turns out I was wrong, and here’s an entire issue dedicated to how Babs frees herself from her stinkin’ thinkin’. Uh, if she does at all, that is! If you want to find out whether Batgirl wins or not, you’ll have to read my review of issue #23! But just to give you a little hint, she does just fine.

Don’t you think the Darkstars should have an application process? It’s cool that they specifically recruit new members, but there should really be some kind of “rush week” for folks looking to join, but who haven’t yet committed themselves to murderous justice. Maybe they’re just looking for the right organization to give them the opportunities! This must be covered under Equal Opportunity Employment laws. Hey, why not read my review of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #45, right here? Maybe it will help you on the Darkstars test later.
