This was probably the Sandman Universe book I was looking forward to the most.
I remember coming across the original run of Books of Magic and buying a handful of issues. Then, a few years later wondering why the character I knew as Tim Hunter was suddenly goin' around calling himself... Harry Potter!
I mean... c'mon.
(and yes, this has been addressed... and Neil Gaiman is adamant that J.K. whatsherface did not crib her little wizard from our boy here... for whatever that's worth).
Anyhoo... let's meet him all over again!
Timothy Hunter was once taught magic... he was taught magic by a quartet of some of the DC/Vertigo Universe's heaviest hitters... but, that was a long time ago. Or maybe it was only a dream... because, at the moment, he ain't all that good with the tricks (illusions, Michael).
This issue separates itself from the other books in the Sandman Universe line by dealing primarily in the mundane world. We basically just accompany Tim Hunter to school... and learn a thing or two about his family life. Perfect way to "introduce" us to his world.
He is kind of an outcast, but not in that nebbish Peter Parker kind of way. While he doesn't seem to be all that skilled at fighting, Tim doesn't back down from bullies. He also doesn't shy away from trying to impress the young ladies.
This issue was wonderful fun... and, while it's been ages since I read the original Books of Magic, this seems to evoke a very similar feel to me. It looks as though it is going to be a series of self-discovery for Tim, and plot discovery for us. Even though this is only the first chapter, we have been given dribs and drabs of what's in store for our young hero... and, honestly, it's all very engaging stuff!
The art is good, though I feel like I might need a few issues for it can grow on me. It feels a lot like art that would be used during one of the last half-dozen times Marvel tried to restart the Ultimate Universe.
Bits and Pieces:
Perhaps the most accessible-to-newcomers of the Sandman Universe line... and luckily, a whole lot of fun to boot! Twenty pages in, and I already feel invested in Tim Hunter... and am looking forward to the next chapter.
