It was a huge week at the old Weird Science HQ with all these big books coming out. As you can see, we have a bunch of books that made the Best Books cut which may finally lay to rest the idea that we are a bunch of negative nancies. Yea, I doubt it, but it was worth a try! Here are what we thought were the Best Books of the Week...
Heroes in Crisis #1
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Clay Mann
Colors: Tomeu Morey
Letters: Clayton Cowles
On Sale Date: September 26, 2018
What Reggie Said: We finally learn about that mysterious superhero brain spa, Sanctuary, just in time for it to go out of business. Heroes die, heroes live, and I'm left feeling that this is one of those Imaginary Stories from the 1950s and 60s that won't have any lasting repercussions. Maybe it's because familiar characters don't behave in the way that I'm used to? Probably.
Score: 7.0/10
Doomsday Clock #7
Written By: Geoff Johns
Art By: Gary Frank
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: September 26, 2018
What Eric Said: Well, this second half of our Doomsday Clock story didn't waste any time in fulfilling a lot of my wants and needs when it comes to story, characters, and interactions. There's a lot of stuff to be excited for here and now that the story finally feels to be going somewhere, I can't wait to see what we get next.
Score: 8.8/10
Justice League: Odyssey #1
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Stjepan Sejic and Deron Bennett
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 26, 2018
What Jim Said: This is an exciting start to a series that I've been looking to get my hands on. It's not perfect, mind you, but Joshua Williamson gets the team together and moving forward in one issue and Stjepan Sejic's art is great as usual. I can easily recommend this book especially for those looking for some space opera fun.
Score: 8.5/10
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis
Art By: Yanick Paquette, Nathan Fairbairn, Josh Reed
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 26, 2018
What Eric Said: While this is still my favorite Man of Steel title that we have right now, this issue felt a bit forced in a lot of its actions and off in a lot of its dialog. With that, we still have a really cool situation going on with our antagonists in this series and I look forward to seeing more of them. I just wish that we'd get more out of each individual character because it feels like they're really not doing much each issue.
Score: 7.0/10
Writer: Mairghread Scott
Art by: Paul Pelletier, Norm Rapmund, Jordie Bellaire and Deron Bennett
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 26, 2018
What Reggie Said: Batgirl behaves heroically as the mystery of Grotesque's grisly murders deepens, and I am enjoying the feeling of not knowing exactly where this story is going to wind up. Curious folks and lapsed Batgirl fans should take a look, this is gearing up to be a pretty intriguing series.
Score: 7.5/10
Writer: James Tynion IV
Art by: Alvaro MartÃnez Bueno, Raul Fernandez, Brad Anderson, and Rob Leigh
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 26, 2018
What Reggie Said: Hold on to your teddy bears, this issue might give you the heebie-jeebies. Everything fans of DC's line of "dark" characters are on full display here, and there is even a moment of uncertainty. I hadn't felt that while reading a comic for some time! If you're curious about the seedy magic side of the DC Universe, then here's the book you can use to bone up.
Score: 8.5/10
Nice to see the top books at the actual top
