Ya know, if I were a betting man... I'd have put it all on this 12-Issue Limited Series "quietly" being retrofitted into a 6-issue Limited Series. Guess it's a good thing I don't bet!
Let's get to it... Raven, Trigon, Sassycat... oh my!
When we last discussed an issue of Raven: Daughter of Darkness, I turned the entire "review" into a half-assed synopsis because... there really just wasn't all that much to say. I was hopeful that this month's installment wouldn't be more of the same... and, good news! This issue didn't even make enough sense to properly synopsize... so, none'a that here!
Wolfman plays a lot with quick passage of time early on in this issue... as Baron Winters watches from his cable-ready fireplace while more or less "lampshading" how little sense everything he'd prophesied as happening was by referring to himself as a liar. Fair play... I guess. Also, a pretty massive cop-out. I mean, we've been taking this fool at his word for $24.00 by this point. Err, I mean six-issues.
Raven (who is suddenly not dead) and the Anime-Eyed girls fight back against Trigon... with all of the "sisters" hitching a ride in Raven's soul gem, all the way back to 1906 San Francisco... I think. Ya see, Trigon wanted to strike out at Earth during a time before superheroes... I think. I've read this sequence several times... and I'm still unsure as to whether or not Raven actually beat him... or if he just walked off the panels.
Raven gets to chat up the Baron... and their conversation was about as irritating as it was dull, and sets up a potentially drastic shift in focus for the back-half of this limited series. If you're following solicitations, you might know that this book is about to become Night Force heavy. If you don't know what Night Force is... well, I suppose you're about to find out.
For something completely different... like jarringly so, Raven's friend Teri meets her new caregiver... Raven gives them the psychic once-over and gives the "thumbs up". Afterwards Raven's Aunt and Mother talk about the only thing they ever seem to... their disparate thoughts on religion, while exchanging some of the most stilted and unnatural dialogue possible to do so.
Now, I've never gone on record as claiming to have the best reading comprehension... and there are times I'd swear on a stack of bibles that I was dyslexic. That said, I'm really at a loss here. I'm not sure if we just read a resolution... or if Trigon will come back to haunt us next issue. I wouldn't bet for or against either option at this point! All I do know is... we've got six more issues of this ahead of us.
Bits and Pieces:
I'm not sure what I just read... but I know I didn't much care for it. I think there was an "ending" here... hidden, deep within the issue... so, yay for that? Pop Mhan's art continues to impress... and does much of the heavy-lifting.
