Our heroes the Cutie Mark Crusaders decide to take a break from Timberwolves and scary forests and volunteer in the Ponyville hospital to earn their Community Service Badge, but when supplies start going missing from the hospital supply closet, the Ponies vacation is short lived as they decide to jump in and get to the bottom of the thefts. All signs point to the curmudgeonly Janitor... but could it be as straightforward as that? Let’s jump in and have a look.

We catch up our Ponies pushing some heavily injured ponies in wheelchairs around the hospital and meet nurse Redheart, who is being chewed out by her boss, the stern Nurse Nightingale about another theft of the supply closet- the third in 2 weeks. The budget in the hospital is very tight, and Redheart will lose her job if she can’t keep the supplies where they belong! Meanwhile, the Cutie Mark Crusaders are caught eavesdropping by the grumpy old janitor Distemper, who takes an immediate dislike to the meddling kids, and he Crusaders take on the case to help their friend and learn that only soft items (bandages, tissues and cotton) and not the medicine have been stolen.

They immediately suspect Distemper (because he’s a janitor- who incidentally is practicing medicine without a license while on duty) and proceed to not so subtlety follow him around the hospital. They take their case to Nurse Nightingale, who swiftly suspends him. Huzzah! When another theft occurs, Nurse Redheart is on the hook and is also suspended. What’s a pony with bills to pay to go to do? Take a load of junk to the Animal Sanctuary with the Crusaders!

Fluttershy the pony needs material for the Equestrian Social Weavers- birds who need soft material to build their nests. It all falls into place when the ponies spot a window just big enough for a bird to squeeze into to get to the supply closet.

All’s well that ends well as the Crusaders get Distemper and Redheart their Jobs back and Nightingale the Nurse is actually a big softy and offers to enroll Distemper in Nursing school. It’s never too late to make something of your life after all!

We end in the Super Sleuth Clubhouse as who appears to be The Big Lebowski needs a team of detectives!

Bits and Pieces:

You don’t need to be a brony or know any pony lore to jump right in. The cartoony art works great for the all-ages story and the vibrant colors really stand out. It’s enough of a twist for young readers and because they specify “no medicine was stolen” the older readers know we can rule out the methadone clinic ponies and the ice addict ponies.

7.7/10
