Fu Jitsu #1 Review

Fu-Schnickens

Written by: Jai Nitz
Art by: Wesley St Claire
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Publisher: Aftershock
Review by: Andrew McAvoy

Fu Jitsu. Hot damn. This title hit me with a startling burst of originality that is increasingly rare among the mainstream publishers. If you like high levels of realism in your comics it's likely this isn't the title for you. If, however, you like storytelling that pushes the boundaries, is surreal, creative and surprises you at every turn then this book is a must.

The Hard Place #2 Review

One the Hard Way

Written by: Doug Wagner
Art by: Nic Rummel and Charlie Kirchoff
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Publisher: Image
Review By: Andrew McAvoy

This issue of The Hard Place treads similar terrain to many bank robbery films viewed over the years; although perhaps best to think along the botch-job heists of Hell or High Water more than the slick precision of Denzel in The Inside Man.

Gasolina #1 Review

Fill Her Up

Written by: Sean Mackiewicz
Art by: Niko Walter and Mat Lopes
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 20, 2017
Publisher: Image
Review by: Andrew McAvoy

The opening few pages of Gasolina reel you in with the beauty of Niko Walter's art and Mat Lopes' colors. All sun-kissed pastels showing warm Mexican sugar cane fields in soft yellows and oranges. Beautiful to look at.

Crosswind #4 Review

Cross My Heart

Written by: Gail Simone
Art by: Cat Staggs
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Publisher: Image
Review by: Andrew McAvoy

Let's just lay it on the line. Gail Simone knows how to write a mighty fine comic book. Within a few pages of this issue you know you are in safe hands. It is the second Simone book I've read this week (she is currently writing Conan/Wonder Woman for Dark Horse/DC) and she knows how to pace a book, catch dialogue and just tell an interesting story. If only there more like her.

The Infinite Loop: Nothing But The Truth #1 Review

Loop-de-Loop

Written by Elsa Charretier, Pierrick Colinet
Art by Daniele Di Nicuolo
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Review by: Andrew McAvoy

Despite this being something of a bumper week in the comics world, no book excited me as much as The Infinite Loop: Nothing But the Truth. Issue 1 kicks of the second volume of the story by Pierrick Colinet and Elsa Charretier. The first volume was jam packed with ideas about time, and the re-percussive effects of time travel, which saw the main protagonist Teddy tasked with finding and removing anomalies in the time stream with the aid of her partner Ulysses. When she stumbled across human anomalies and fell in love with one of them (Ano) that's when things started to get really complex. The first volume is a joy to read, and I would heartily recommend it. That said you don't need to have read it  - you can jump straight into this first issue of the second volume.

Throwback Thursday: NextWave Agents of H.A.T.E. #1 Review

Written by: Warren Ellis
Art by: Stuart Immonen and Wayne van Grawbadger
Colours by: Dave McCaig
Letters by: Chris Eliopoulos
Published by: Marvel Comics
First published: 2006
Price: Free on the MU app

Tick-Tick-Tick-Boom!

Quick question. Which Marvel comic ends with the line “Oh my God. It’s wearing underpants.”? (Hint: You’re about to read a review of it.) Like all the best comedy, NextWave: Agents of H.A.T.E. is a relatively short, but still memorable reading experience. Fawlty Towers, The Day Today, Father Ted – none of these classics of British TV comedy outstayed their welcome; all of them have attained legendary status at least in part because their legacy is unsullied by mercenary attempts to milk the golden cow long after the creamiest parts of its output have been savoured. (That metaphor got away from me a bit there.) NextWave: Agents of H.A.T.E. is a similar beast. Only 12 issues of it exist, but they are among the funniest superhero comics you will ever read. So buckle up, turn off your Etheric Loop Recall Televocometer, and get ready for a rollercoaster ride of… well, profanity-laced madness, mostly. Oh, and underpants. Really big underpants.

The American Way #3 Review and ***SPOILERS***

People Talking About Stuff

Written by: John Ridley
Art by: Georges Jeanty, John Livesay, and Nick Filardi
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

***NON-SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM***

After a solid start to the series, I’m excited to see how John Ridley develops these characters and this story more. I had some trouble getting into the first two issues having not read the original series, but I think the character work in those issues gave me enough background to go from there and understand the rest of the story. While this isn’t the type of story I normally flock to, I think it’s an important book in today’s society and I’m excited to see what this creative team can do with such a heavy subject. Let’s see how they do in this third issue.

Justice League / Power Rangers #6 Review

Justice League / Power Rangers #6

Writer: Tom Taylor
Art Team: Stephen Byrne
DC Comics Boom Studios
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Cover Price: $3.99

Zedd’s No Good Very Bad Day

Justice League Power Rangers wraps up after quite a strange release schedule that spanned 9 months. For someone that forgets everything that can be mildly problematic.  Regardless of my simpleness how does Tom Taylor wrap up the craziness that is a giant Alpha, the Justice League in the Power Rangers Universe, all while Brainiac and Lord Zedd still are hanging out together and around? That's me for to know and you to click the continue button to find out.

Suicide Squad #26 Review and **SPOILERS**

-->
A Croc Among Men

Writer: Rob Williams
Artist & Cover: Stjepan Sejic
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Cover Price: $2.99
On Sale Date: September 27, 2017

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Another crossover with Dark Night: Metal! Often, the announcement of comic book event crossovers elicit moans and groans from the faithful. But not this time! Metal has been, if you’ll pardon the pun, very metal. Okay, you don’t need to pardon that pun, it was awful. And not really a pun. But that shouldn’t taint your opinion of Suicide Squad #26, my review of which you can read right now!

Mother Panic #11 Review and **SPOILERS**

Mother Panic #11

"Under the Skin, Part 2"

Written By: Jody Houser
Art By: Shawn Crystal
Colors By: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 27, 2017

Well, if the comics "journalists" are to be believed, today we'll be discussing the penultimate (for now) issue of Mother Panic.  I gotta say, this book has managed to somewhat win me over... which has taken me completely by surprise.  I'll also say that I am clearly not the target audience for this book... and that's okay.  I don't have to be the target for every single book.  It would be nice, however, if the audience this book was endeavoring to reach was a bit more sizable (or were, ya know, actual paying customers).

The Hellblazer #14 Review and **SPOILERS**

-->
Flight of the Barfly

Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Jesús Merino
Colorist: Carrie Strachan
Letterer: Sal Cipriano
Cover: Tim Seeley with Chris Sotomayer
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 27, 2017

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

I’m still feeling sort of wary about this title, but I have no great complaints about the previous issue. It’s just that I was so badly burned by the first writer on the series since Rebirth, I can’t help but to temper my enthusiasm. But that won’t make me temper my opinions, as you’ll find out when you read my review of The Hellblazer #14, right here!

The Kamandi Challenge #9 Review

Challenging Indeed

Written by: Tom King
Art by: Kevin Eastman, Freddie Williams II and Clem Robins
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

I can't say that the Kamandi Challenge has been a book that I wait for with bated breath each month, but once I jump into each issue, I do try to have fun with what's going on.  Sure, the 'challenge" part of it all has led to a bit of disjointed storytelling and seems to hinder the writers, rather than help them, but again, it's all in the spirit of fun and a little Jack Kirby worship.  So, with the hot streak that Tom King is on lately up the ante in this series as he jumps on with Kevin Eastman and Freddie Williams II?  Let's find out.

Batgirl #15 Review and **SPOILERS**

-->
Won’t They/Won’t They

Script: Hope Larson
Pencils: Chris Wildgoose
Inks: Jose Marzan Jr.
Colors: Mat Lopes
Letters: Deron Bennett
Cover: Dan Mora
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 27, 2017

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Oooh, do you see what Dick and Babs are doing on the cover? K-I-S-S-I-N-G! As I understand it, the next steps are to climb a tree together and then Babs pushes Dick around in a baby carriage? I confess I am not a natural romantic. Well, let’s see if these two crazy kids end up making out while Mr. Freeze gets away or something, shall we? Check out my review of Batgirl #15, right here!

Batman/The Shadow #6 Review and SPOILERS

The Student Becomes The Teacher. No, Really.

Written by Scott Snyder and Steve Orlando
Art by Riley Rossmo
Colours by Ivan Plascencia
Letters by Clem Robins
Published by: DC Comics and Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

This coming together of Batman and one of his more influential antecedents reaches its climax in this issue and there is, in my mind, a fair amount of promise the series now needs to fulfill. So far, we’ve been introduced to the intriguing notion that The Shadow has woven himself into the tapestry of Batman’s personal history as a way of training him up to be his immortal replacement. In The Stag, we’ve also been given a villain whose costume design is genuinely unsettling and whose very nature seems to be up for grabs, a mystery whose answer must surely be revealed in these pages. The last issue left us with several important questions in urgent need of answering. Who is The Stag? Who or what exactly comprises his glowing ‘army’ currently in the process of tearing down Shamba-La, the mystical haven in which The Shadow was born? How will a fatally wounded Batman survive this encounter, much less triumph in it? Will The Shadow and Batman finally reconcile their differences? Which one of them was right about the nature of the universe? Will the Joker start doing something useful? Or meaningful? Will Orlando deploy yet another plant metaphor? Will the last five months of reading this title have been, after all, worth it?

There really is only one way to find out…

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #29 Review and **SPOILERS**

Here’s Your Motherbox, What’s Your Hurry?

Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Cover: Sandoval, Tarragona and Morey
Cover Price: $2.99

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Last issue was sort of…an issue that happened, and I’m quite interested to know what happens next. What’s up with these New God-killing golems? Who killed ‘em? How do their powers work? Why are they rocking Omega Beams? I hope some or all of these questions are answered in the new issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #29. And you can find out if they are in my review of that very issue, right here!

Wonder Woman #31 Review and *SPOILERS*

Cutting Down The Family Tree

Written By: James Robinson
Art By: Carlo Pagulayan, Sean Parsons, Jason Paz, Scott Hanna, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Saida Temofonte
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

With over a year's wait, it's finally here!  That's right, we're finally getting back to the story of Jason, who, if you didn't read the Darkseid War at the end of the New 52, is Wonder Woman's twin brother.  I was so disappointed when Greg Rucka took over this book at the beginning of Rebirth and didn't do anything with that phenomenal cliffhanger to the end of that event because it seemed like the biggest thing done to Wonder Woman's character in a long ass time, but it's finally here and now that Diana knows what the Truth and Lies are, hopefully she can navigate her way through this story.  Let's check it out.

Blue Beetle #13 Review and *SPOILERS*

Justice League 3001?

Written By: Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis
Art By: Scott Kolins, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Josh Reed
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's the final issue of this creative team for Blue Beetle.......... and I don't really know where to begin.  I guess a heads up will be sufficient here...... so heads up, this issue will try to finish up Giffen and DeMatteis' run of Justice League 3001 from the DCYou era of the New 52.  Yeah, it's odd as hell and even though I read the majority of that series, it's been so long now that I couldn't tell you shit about it.  So with that in mind........ let's check out some Blue Beetle.

Batman Beyond #12 Review and *SPOILERS*

Batgirl Beyond

Written By: Vita Ayala, Steve Orlando
Art By: Siya Oum, Dexter Vines, Tony Avina, Travis Lanham
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Okay, let's jump into some Batman Beyond action and while I wish there was a reason to catch everyone else up on what been going on in this series before getting into this issue.......... There really isn't a point because this issue seems to be something that was written awhile ago, but had a few tweaks to it to try and put it in line with this series....... which doesn't really work.  That' being said, let's jump into Batman Beyond and see what this guest team is bringing to this interlude as it's called.

Nightwing The New Order #2 Review

Heavy Meddle

Written by: Kyle Higgins
Art by: Trevor McCarthy, Clayton Cowles and Dean White
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 27, 2017

I really liked the first issue of this series and have been looking forward to this one for a month now.  Yes, this is a dark future where Dick Grayson is not exactly a hero, but that's the fun with elseworlds stories like this, isn't it?  Yes, it is!  The want to know so much more about the story that Kyle Higgins is giving us and I want to know it yesterday.  Patience was never one of my strong points, obviously.  My wait is over, but is this issue worthy of my early praise?  Let's find out...
