Generation Zero #7 Review

Written by: Fred Van Lente
Art by: Diego Bernard

Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017
Publisher: Valiant
Review by: Repairman Jack

Now that the last issue and it’s role as the catch-up, or jumping on point, is out of the way it’s time for this book to get moving again. The last issue wasn’t all bad, but it really left me wanting more. It honestly didn’t feel like we had any kind of conclusion before that so the idea that we were starting a “new arc” felt a little misleading. With that being said I come into this issue pretty excited, we left off with the gang in a new heroscape and going to confront the Corner Men. So will this issue come back after the minor hiccup and live up to expectation or will I once again finish wanting more?

Cougar and Cub #2 Review

Cougar and Cub #2

Writer: Nick Marino
Artist: Daniel Arruda Massa
Backup Story: Rosie Knight
Action Lab Danger Zone
Release Date: February 15, 2017
Cover Price: Comixology $2.99

Cougar, Cubs, and Cradles OH MY!

I don’t know about all comic readers but when I’m building my monthly pull list I like to include a variety of different comics from different genres in my list. I’m a man with commitment issues after all here; I can’t just read Batman and Spider-Man all the god damn time. I need something over the top, possibly shocking, that appeals to my weird side a bit maybe. Well in this instance I found a title that meets and exceeds those criteria in Action Lab Danger Zones Cougar and Cub by Nick Marino with art by Daniel Arruda Massa.  Here’s my elevator pitch to get you interested; now imagine Batman as an older female hero training a young male Robin type sidekick, give the book a groovy throwback feel, then make it vulgar, violent, rude, and crude with a whole bunch of funny …. Interested?  Jump in and let’s do this.

Top 5 Fridays: Top 5 Jack Kirby Characters

Welcome to another exciting edition of Top 5 Fridays! On Tuesday, the next series to carry the Young Animal brand was announced: Bug! To which a good majority of people probably went, "Who?" The Forager aka Bug was a part of the Fourth World Saga, the original story of the New Gods that was created by Jack Kirby. Now while I'm certain many of our older readers have heard of 'The William Blake of Comics,' many of our younger readers might be having a similar reaction to the announcement of Bug! To those who don't know Jack Kirby, he was a comic book artist, writer, and editor who basically shaped the look of comics for years to come. He created the New Gods, OMAC, Kamandi, and I'm not even going to get into how much he made for Marvel, but I will say that it shouldn't just be saying "Created by Stan Lee" in the Marvel Movies. With the announcement of this new miniseries, I felt it best to look back at some of Kirby's greatest characters. As always this is an opinion based list, so if you see someone you don't like, including a few Marvel Characters, I apologize. With that out of the way, let's dive into this week's list.

Letterer: Shawn Lee
DC Comics/IDW Publishing
Release Date: February 16, 2017

Wanna know how I got these bumps?!

Our beloved team-up involving Batman and the Ninja Turtles has been a fun all ages affair blending two distinct and classic styles of art perfectly.  We’ve witnessed our heroes trying to solve a mystery involving multi-versal teleporting triangles while fighting off classic rouges from each universe. So as we the readers hit the home stretch of this series I’m wondering what characters are left to throw at us, if any, and when is our twist coming? Do we get lucky in issue four here? Let’s find out.

Odyssey of the Amazons #2 Review

That's What She Said

Written by: Kevin Grevioux
Art by: Ryan Benjamin, Don Ho, Richard Friend, Tony Washington and Saida Temofonte
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

I was not a fan of the first issue of this book, but after finding out that it was condensed down to six issues from the originally planned twelve, I decided to give it another look.  Really, the main issue I had with it (besides it not being the Legend of Wonder Woman) was the story and characters were just thrown at the reader with little to no explanation.  So, did the second issue give the reader something better?  Let's find out...

He-Man/Thunder Cats #5 Review

ORKO!! Go back to the Castle!!

Writer: Rob David & Lloyd Goldfine
Art Team: Freddie E. Williams II & Jeremy Colwell
Letters: Deron Bennett
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

I bring to you the penultimate review of the penultimate issue of the He-Man/Thunder Cats six issue crossover series. I’ve personally enjoyed this as a story much more than I anticipated going in. Anyway, currently the Ancient Spirits of Evil, who are the size of four Voltrons and commanded by Skeletor and Mumm-Ra might I add, are in route to the Castle of Grayskull for even more power. It appears are heroes, all of them, are all but up Eternia Creek without a Sword of Omens to paddle.  Can we count on zombie He-Man and Lion-O to arrive just in time to save the day or should Skeletor have called Mumm-Ra thirty years ago to help get the job done right the first time?  If you have the power, read on to find those answers, my thoughts, and more inside.

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Hmm…something hinky happened with the solicit for this issue…the DC Comics website shows a story about the vampires imported to devour New York City’s homeless population (and somehow frame Harley Quinn in the process), but this issue…isn’t about that. Of course, it does recall a moment dropped in an earlier issue of Harley Quinn, as this series is known to do, but it’s not about vampires eating the homeless. Which, all things considered, might be just as well. What is this issue about? Well, you’ll have to read my review of Harley Quinn #14 to find out! And you’re in luck, because it’s right here!

Remember those crazy candies, Warheads? They were like these jawbreakers that started sweet, then got hot as hell, and then the center was sour. Not actually sour, though, candy sour. More like tart. I hated those damned candies, they demanded a wide range of emotions from a kid in elementary school. Like, just give me a block of sugar or some syrupy sap in a toothpaste tube already. Warheads were more torture than treat, which may have owed to the name. The Warhead in the last issue of Aquaman didn’t seem too torturous…I mean, he was literally torturing people, but he didn’t rub me the wrong way as a character. How do you think I’ll feel after a more thorough introduction? Find out in my review of Aquaman #17!

Everyone has those character that they will always follow because they are what makes comics so great in their opinion. Now a lot of these character are the big name heroes that we see all the time. For me, it always came down to three character. These characters were Deadpool, Constantine, and BATWOMAN! I’m a huge fan of Batwoman and I haven’t stopped talking about her book since the New 52. Unfortunately, the book suffered from controversy and eventually came to an end before the DCYOU. Luckily, fans of the character were able to see her take a leading role once again in Detective Comics and now, finally we have a Batwoman comic once again. I’ve been patiently waiting and now I can finally jump right in once more.

**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Now that Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye is the best-selling comic book in the world,* I think it’s time the folks at Young Animal branch out into licensing and merchandising. Action figures and t-shirts are the obvious things. But what about a deal with some fast food chain to create the Crave Carson? It’s inspired by White Castle’s 30-pack Crave Case, but it could work in any restaurant. I also have an idea for Cave Carson’s Mauve Agave-Scented Personal Car Freshener Dongle. Gerard Way, give me a call. Everyone else, take a look at my review for Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye #5! Right here!

Mother Panic #3 Review and **SPOILERS**

Mother Panic #3

Writer: Jody Houser
Illustrator and Cover: Tommy Lee Edwards
Variant Cover: Mingjue Chen
Letterer: John Workman
Editor: Molly Mahan
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: February 15. 2017

When I think about it, it feels like I've known Mother Panic for so much longer than two months.  That's not a good thing or bad thing, just something that popped into my head when I typed that "#3" above.  If I were a betting man, and it's a good thing I'm not, I'd have put money on this being at least issue five.

It's no secret to visitors and listeners that I haven't been too keen on this book up to this point... let's see if third time really is the charm.

Trinity #6 Review

I'm Free

Written by: Francis Manapul
Art by: Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, Matt Santorelli, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

It's time to get to the bottom of this Mercy story!  Yep, it's the finale and I hope that Francis Manapul answers all my questions...what is the White Mercy, what is Mongul's endgame and why isn't this my favorite book in Rebirth.  I loved the first issue so much, but have been waiting for Manapul to repeat the magic of that dinner party.  Does this finale get me back on the Trinity Train?  Let's find out...

Green Arrow #17 Review

Bow Knows

Written by: Ben Percy
Art by: Otto Schmidt and  Nate Piekos
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

I have been getting more and more into the Green Arrow book as it's gone on.  I love the whole "Team Arrow" feel to it and Emiko rejoining was a wish come true.  Last issue started to thin the herd of bad guys (something that really needed to be done), but also the good guys as well.  We still have Malcolm Merlyn and the Ninth Circle out and about and the whole murderer thing hanging over Ollie's head.  So, do we narrow the focus down this week with some more killings?  Let's find out...

Green Lanterns #17 Review and *SPOILERS*

Fear of Failure

Written By: Sam Humphries
Art By: Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Blond, Dave Sharpe
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Oh boy, we had ourselves one hell of a romp in the previous issue of Green Lanterns.  We saw our heroes go to Gotham, Simon and Batman had themselves a pissing contest about Simon's gun and we saw Alfred affected by whatever crazy ass fear signal that is coming out of anti-Batman propaganda videos floating around on the internet.  On top of all that, we saw Scarecrow being the root of the problem and while most fans of Batman immediately centered on him after learning that there was a problem with fear in Gotham, I don't think any of us thought he was toying around with the fear spectrum............... honestly, because it doesn't make much sense, but besides that, it was a cool cliffhanger.  Okay, with that out of the way, let's jump into this issue and see if our Lantern heroes and Batman can work any better together here and if they can break Alfred of his whammy before putting a bullet in Simon's thinking cap.  Let's check it out.

Super Sons #1 Review

Pajama Jammy Jam

Written by: Peter J. Tomasi
Art by: Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sanchez and Rob Leigh
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

It's here!  I know I'm not supposed to sound excited for a book, being a reviewer and all, but I've been waiting so long for Super Sons to arrive that I can't hold back my glee.  I love Damian and Jon and after their two-part story in Superman, I've been counting the days until this book arrived.  Well, the day is here and now that I've read it, was it worth the wait?  Let's find out...

Nightwing #15 Review and *SPOILERS*

You Give Love A Bad Name

Written By: Tim Seeley
Art By: Minkyu Jung, Chris Sotomayor, Carlos M. Mangual
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Now that the Run-Offs have been cleared of any wrong doing, Dick can finally get into his new life in Bludhaven and from what we saw at the end of the previous issue, it looks like his new life has a new girlfriend going for it.  That's right, Nightwing told Defacer, Shawn Tsang that he was the tights-clad hero of Bludhaven, but it didn't really seem to matter because as she says, she figured it out anyway.......... and really, anyone should have been able to figure that out.  With that though, we have ourselves a Valentine's Day story going on here, where we spend two months peaking into the relationship status of our hero and the former villain, through it's highs and lows.  Let's jump into this issue and hopefully find out that Dick isn't the perfect boyfriend because while I know I can't look as good as he does, I might be able to do things better in other areas........... like put the toilet seat down when I'm done.  Let's check this out.

The Wildstorm #1 Review

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Written by: Warren Ellis
Art by: Jon Davis-Hunt, Ivan Plascencia and Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

I do not know much about the Wildstorm Universe save the characters that appeared in the New 52,
but that's one of the main reasons I'm so excited about this book.  I love origin stories and getting one with a whole universe equals awesome and starting off on square one with everyone else makes it feel like we are all going on a journey together...a journey into the unknown!  Well, maybe not unknown, but hopefully fun and exciting.  So, now that it's here, is this opening chapter of the Wildstorm everything I was hoping it would be?  Let's find out...

Superman #17 Review and *SPOILERS*

When The Parents Are Away.......... Apparently Jon Drops Acid.

Written By: Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason
Art By: Sebastian Fiumara, Dave Stewart, Rob Leigh
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Thank goodness we're back in Hamilton County for this one because even though I was initially excited as hell to get our Superman in a big ass Multiversity style story, I found the ending to it as confusing as something that Grant Morrison would have wrote himself.  Yeah, the ending didn't make much sense to me, but ultimately it seems that the only thing we really needed to know was that some gigantic threat is on the horizon and it threatens all life in the Multiverse........... Well, that and Mr. Oz got his hands on the super sucker, Prophecy.  Let's jump into this one shot featuring our new Superboy and see what kind of trouble Jon can get into while his parents are.......... Well, probably having social services called on them because goddamn do they leave him home alone a lot.  Let's check it out.

Justice League #15 Review

Time After Time

Written by: Bryan Hitch
Art by: Fernando Pasarin, Matt Ryan, Brad Anderson and Richard Starkings
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

I was not as much of a fan of the last issue of Justice League as others, but if having the League get together and hug it out will lead to better stories from here on out then I guess I'm in.  I mean, they already saved the world at least four times together so nothing should be able to stop a team that has "regrouped", right?  They are going to need it in this book, since it seems like every day is Earth's last.    So, what does Bryan Hitch have in store for the League this week and is it any good?  Let's find out...

Batman #17 Review

Be Brave

Written by: Tom King

Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: February 15, 2017

Bane may be on his way to Gotham...with a few days to kill, but the first issue of the "I am Bane" arc was pretty damn fun.  I can never get enough of the Robins together and watching Bruce eat a Batburger with a knife and fork...Priceless!  However, it all ended in a messed up scene that couldn't be real, right?  RIGHT?!?!  Do we find that out and do we actually get to see Bane in his own arc?  Let's find out...
