Now that we’ve learned all about the Controllers, I expect to see some hardcore Controlling around here! First, I expect they’ll take over our television remotes. That’s probably an easy thing to control and it would have an immediately shocking impact on everyone. Next, they’ll probably commandeer the air traffic control towers at major airports. Explain It!

Despite the title being Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, the current storyline features the Core Four Corpsmen, that is Hal, John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, working without the rest of their galactic police force to free the Guardians from the grips of the Controllers. Also, John Stewart is in charge of the mission, as he is in charge of the entire Corps. So this book…it needs a new title. How about Tales of the Green Lantern Corps? That works, doesn’t it? Or even Core Four Corpsmen! You can have that one!

So this issue has our Core Four attacking the Controllers’ compound in space, which is guarded by a bunch of heavily-armored soldiers with some Jack Kirby designs on their uniforms. Our fellas dispatch these clowns in their usual ways, and then another team of guards shoots vibration guns at the four Earthlings. This messes them up for a while, then when they work together it doesn’t, and they bust right into the Controllers’ chamber where they are attempting to turn Sayd into another Controller.

And—as I mention every issue—the artwork is absolutely gorgeous in this issue. There are a lot of great looking space and action scenes, and aside from a few facial inconsistencies it’s a dynamic comic that flows well from front to back. But nothing really happens. This whole Controller army exists just to keep the Green Lanterns from confronting them an issue earlier than intended. I never felt like they were in any danger, and the goings-on between the Controllers and the Guardians don’t seem to have major stakes, either. Shorter story arcs, a more focused direction for this series, and a title change would probably do wonders here. In that particular order.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue runs in place as our four Earth-born Green Lanterns stall for time while the Controllers figure out how to work their doohickeys. There's some phenomenal art and plotting in this issue, that might be worth the cover price alone. It's probably not worth the time spent reading it, however. You can pick up the next issue and have missed practically nothing.
