Let's step thirty-five years into the future, where the world is just starting to rebuild itself after the devastation it faced at the hands of Brother Eye and where Terry McGinnis is facing off against Damian Wayne, who has now become the leader of the League of Assassins. Yeah, it's a pretty fucked up future, but hopefully with Bruce Wayne showing up right before Damian lands his killing blow to Terry, he'll be able to talk some sense into his boy and stop all of this craziness and welcome him back into the Bat Family........ yeah, it seems a bit far fetched, but I love Damian as a hero and would hate to see him become a bad guy for good in this dark future. Let's jump into this issue and see if Damian kills our hero or if the prototype Bat suit that Terry's wearing actually takes full control of our hero and pushes him over the edge. Let's check it out.
Explain It!:
Our issue begins with us finding out that last issue's cliffhanger wasn't really anything to worry about because Damian is not about to go and kill someone who is so much less than himself because there wouldn't be anything satisfying about it and with that revelation, it's time for a few more as we dive back into the past to see what put Damian Wayne on the path to become the Demon's Head and what he intends to do with that power in the future.
It's no real big shock or revelation that Damian simply went to Ra's Al Ghul's side after learning about how Batman's Brother Eye creation was going to end up destroying the world and how the League of Assassins planned on remaking the world once the dust had cleared from that battle and that Damian's scope matched up more with his grandfather's worldview instead of Bruce's limited worry about Gotham alone. During the exposition, Terry regains his wits about him and his suit compensates for the sonics that knocked it out of whack in the previous issue, but Damian's just too tough for Terry, even with the A.I. of the prototype Bat suit and with the aid of an aged Goliath, Terry is put down once more so that Damian can continue his conversation with his father.
In the end, we see that Ra's continued Lazarus Pit baths left him immune to its effects after a while and he eventually died, leaving Damian in charge and now that Brother Eye had started the purge of humanity, Damian intends to use the weakness of the world against it to finish the job and see Ra's vision of a better world come to fruition by the use of warheads. Yeah, Damian better hurry up and do what he plans to because Terry is back up for round three and after looking like he killed Goliath, it seems that the suit's A.I. has taken over completely and Damian might actually have himself a proper fight coming his way.
That's it for this issue of Batman Beyond and while we did get some more background on what Damian Wayne's been up to, there wasn't too much in the way of revelations here because all we really needed to know is that Ra's died and that Damian's continuing his plan of depleting the population. Which we do get, but it's long and drawn out, with a few fights thrown in to add some excitement to the book, but with Terry just getting his ass kicked over and over again....... which is completely expected, there just isn't a lot of meat to this book that gets me excited for what's to come. The art in this issue is great though and I always love Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo's work, but that's about the only thing I'm loving in this series anymore because each issue just seems to be padded out to get us to our next cliffhanger and that's getting really annoying.
Bits and Pieces:
We delve into Damian Wayne's backstory in this issue and really, it's nothing you didn't already figure our from reading this arc so far. Yeah, there's nothing much to this issue at all and like so many installments to this series, it only seems that we're reading it for the cliffhangers because the majority of the issues just seem to be filler to pad out the arcs. The art's great, but that's about the only great thing here.
5.8/10
I liked it.
