How the Rangers Got Their Groove Back

For some reason all DC related crossovers, without #1’s on the cover, were delayed last month but we get back on schedule here in May with issue #4 of Justice League/Power Rangers. If you recall where we left events, the team of Lord Zedd and Brainiac have hightailed it off ‘DC’s Earth’ with the Power Rangers coins and inter-dimensional transporters.  This forced the Justice League and Power Rangers to Switzerland in pursuit of a means to chase these dastardly devils responsible before more trouble strikes.  So let’s see if Cyborg is finally handy for something besides taking calls in the Watchtower, join me inside.

In our first act we rejoin the ‘good guys’ on ‘DC’s Earth’ trying to diagram a solution to their problem of jumping over to the ‘Ranger’s Earth’ without teleporters. It’s a good thing there’s a couple big brains around in Cyborg and Billy the Blue Ranger who science up a conclusion, that along with the Green Rangers dagger, will give this team-up of heroes the ability to get back to Angel Groove.

After an impressive display of brute strength by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Jon Stewart to setup our inter-dimensional travel situation we finally catch up to the scene that was foreshadowed in the beginning of this mini-series. The Rangers become witness to their home town being turned into a bottled city by Brainiac, with Zack taking it especially hard being witness to his parents just missing out on escaping the bottling process.  Superman

From here things really pick up, Batman points out what we all can’t forget which is once Brainiac takes a city he destroys the earth it’s from.  This puts our team on the offensive, in a super cool moment Batman spills the beans about raiding the ‘Easter Eggs Armory’, providing the currently powerless rangers with the tools to join the League in taking the fight to Brainiac in an attempt to secure their power coins once again and find the bottled city of Angel Groove.

Once aboard Brainiac’s ship the team-up shows just how effective they can be together as they tear through bad guys like Rambo on even more steroids than he already is.  Just when the battle looks to be turning in the favor of the ‘good guys’ and the Rangers secure their power coins once again, Cyborg, after interfacing with Brainiac’s ship becomes infected, taking out the unsuspecting heroes.  Billy springs into action ending the issue with a pretty shocking cliffhanger you’ll have to see to believe.

Overall, it was a slow start to the issue with a sciencey filled beginning and some more elaboration on the scene from the start of this series. However when our heroes get to action from there the story makes plenty of headway setting the stage for a high stakes final two issues.  Tom Taylor get bonus points for devising some clever ways to get the Rangers out of street clothes and back into action, which any decently well versed DC fan will appreciate.  The art continues to be top notch stuff from Byrne with colors that jump off the page, some great characters designs, and unique paneling making this book, from issue one, a treat to look at.

Bits and Pieces

The Justice League/Power Rangers fourth issue continues the trend in the series of providing an entertaining crossover to sink your teeth into with some great art fans of either property highlighted will appreciate.
