I don't want to start this book off by saying how much I love it for fear of sounding like a broken record.  It's okay kids, look it up!  I will tell you that Tom Taylor better be put on one of DC's bigger books (Psst...Justice League) very soon.  It just makes sense.  The guy can write a slew of characters and make each have a unique, yet appropriate voice and knows how to tell a story.  I know that sounds crazy these days...a writer who knows how to tell a story, but that sort of thing does exist.  So, sit back and enjoy my review of Chapter 8, buy this book and show DC that us fans do support well written books...

The issue opens with Bruce at work trying to figure out where and who took Damian when he gets a cute little visitor...Connor.  If you read me previous reviews, you know how much I already love little Conner and Tom Taylor keeps the love going.  He is just so awesome as he spills the beans on what his parents think of Bruce (Oliver being the best) and mentions "chores" which sets off a flashback for Bruce that triggers two times the feels.

We go back to the early days of Damian as Robin and while that's always awesome, it starts out bittersweet as we see Bruce and Alfred arguing (playfully) about what would happen if Alfred wasn't around anymore.  Alfred is right on with everything he says and it just makes it all the more heartbreaking.

On to Damian, Bruce has set up a test for the little guy.  He needs to go across Gotham and back to the Batcave...maybe in the quickest time possible.  I say "maybe" because it's all really a setup to see if Damian is a good guy and he passes with flying colors.  This scene is needed to remind us all that deep down, Damian is Bruce's son and a hero.  No matter what he's done in this Universe up until now.

That's when things get a little dark.  It's one of those "good intentions" things that has me scared because of what is bound to happen and also the backlash it is bound to cause once it's discovered.  I want to see both even if the first part scares the crap out of me!

This is a very quick moving issue, but one that points out Tom Taylor's awesome character work.  Anyone can read and enjoy this chapter, but fans of Damian will eat it up and want seconds and thirds.  It's not a redemption, but it just might be the beginnings of one.

Every chapter Daniel Sampere does ends up being my favorite.  He really has settled into this book and this chapter is tailor made for him as it features characters that he just nails.  Great looking chapter all around.

Bits and Pieces:

This is a great character chapter of Injustice 2.  While mostly a flashback, it's both bittersweet and paves the way for a redemption story down the road...or an even eviler one!  Either way, the story and art kill it again and I can't recommend this series enough.

9.0/10

  1. Even the "filler" issues are great ... makes me miss a batman and Robin book w/o all the others

  2. Man, I didn't think this Damien could be semi redeemed but now I think Taylor can make it happen.

  3. Loved this issue, seeing Damian not be a full on 100% prick is a rarity for DC. Also funny to see that even Bruce has his own flaws. Weird thing is everyone knows he's batman so why doesn't he hire a new butler.
