Besides Scott Snyder’s incredible run on American Vampire and Tom King’s breathtaking Sheriff of Babylon. I have been searching for another Vertigo title that can hook me in like these other books have and I must say that Savage Things has done that and much more.

The story begins with the aftermath of Bob’s challenge to the 40 Black Forest monsters that no one is allowed to open this classroom door until there are 20 left standing. We see dialogue between Dr. Martin Koenig and Bob discuss the two main characters in this story, Cain and Abel.

We are then brought to present time where Abel was taken into custody to be questioned and tested of what he knows and what he can do for them going forward. Because as it seems, Abel wasn’t as free as he thought he was. Kira then asks Abel to tell her about Black Forrest and that is when you get a little more backstory of what their true mission was. They weren’t soldiers but monsters that were meant to terrify the enemy. Which in turn is where we get to learn more about who Cain.

Once Abel agrees to help, we are taken to a hostage situation in a local hospital where Abel meets one of his old Black Forrest buddies Benjamin. After a brief but important discussion is had, Abel decides to take matters into his own hands and handle things his way.

Bits and Pieces:

Savage Things doesn’t hold anything back. This is a beautifully written book and the art perfectly matches its dark, grim style. There is no good guy in this story.  It's evil vs evil and I’m perfectly fine with that.

9/10
