Here we are once again...day three of the Weirdies! The most prestigious award in all of...well, I don't know, but we think it's a big deal! This one is a big one...Best Penciler and Best Teamup. So, get settled and get ready, because the show is about to begin...
Best Teamup
Jim's Pick:
Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz
One of the most pleasant surprises of Rebirth for me was the Green Lanterns book. I know that Eric Shea will have you believe that the book started off with it's leads bickering a bit too much, but it paid off eventually with a team that I love. I was already a Simon Baz fan and Sam Humphries made me a Jessica fan as well. Now, if she could just tame that anxiety a bit...
Reggie's Pick:
Constantine and Section Eight
Okay, I sort of fudged the parameters of this category, since Section Eight is already a team. Really, I wanted to highlight how hysterical the take on a DCU-integrated John Constantine has been in Hard-Travelin' Heroes. Clearly Garth Ennis has a personal act to grind with this kinder, gentler Constantine and he makes no bones about it. From the top of his space helmet to the bottom of the surfboard he ripped off from Silver Surfer, he's been the driving force of this miniseries and of my stomach aching from laughter.
Eric's Pick:
The Justice League and The Crime Syndicate (Darkseid War)
Right off the bat I want to tell you that I love The Crime Syndicate. There's just something that tickles my fancy when it comes to evil doubles of our heroes and the New 52 versions of these characters all looked great and for the short time that we actually saw this team-up........ you know, before The Crime Syndicate were completely devastated, I was having the time of my life and squealing like a school girl. Hopefully we can find some comic book way to bring these characters back because it killed me when they all died.
Best Penciler
Jim's Pick:
Juan E. Ferreyra
I already picked Juan for Colorist of the Year so it almost feels unfair to give him penciler as well, right? Nope!!! Juan won me over during his run on the New Suicide book, but he really showed how great he is on the Rebirth Green Arrow series. Seriously, check out his issues and you will see why he got this award.
Reggie's Pick:
Juan E. Ferreyra
Once again, Jim and I pick the same winner for the same category, and once again it's the same person: Juan Ferreyra! That's how great his artwork is, though I wonder if anything is actually "penciled" in a technical sense. It's the painterly finishes and wonderful colors that tie it all together, but I suppose it all begins as a sketch in Juan's mind, and it's that mind and those sketches for which this award is due.
Jason Fabok
Two years running now Jason Fabok has taken the top spot for my favorite penciler and even though we didn't get a lot of him in 2016, his work on the Darkseid War was fantastic and then he truly made me realize how much his skilled hand was missed when he came out of hiding to give us the first issue of the Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad event and just blew me away. I really hope we see a lot more of him in 2017 because people who just jumped onto DC Comics during Rebirth need to see Jason Fabok shake his art thing.
Thanks a lot guys!! really honored to among your selection!! and almost all of my pages are pure pencils, then I add watercolor and Digital, no inks on the work. so penciler fits really well!! Thanks again!!
