For anyone that thought the Night of the Monster Men story was a bunch of bologna and jumped off halfway through, take that leftover money you saved and go buy the first trade of Moon Knight and get caught up to this point. You don’t need to be well versed in the history of a B-list (at best) character to appreciate a fantastically crafter comic book. Jeff Lemire is taking Marc Spector on a roller coaster through his different personas, and that’s one ride I want to be in the front row for.

The last issue ended with the setup of a Star Wars-style fight between the Moon Knights and the Space Wolves, and if you thought Lemire was going to make you wait around to see how they plays out, think again. We jump right back into the action as Marc Spector and his co-pilot Frenchie prepare to take on the Space Wolves. We get some backstory of whom these wolves are and why this fight is taking place in space, but odds are this is all in Marc Spector’s head, so it probably won’t matter too much in the end.

Marc decides to engage General Lupinar, commander of the fleet of Space Wolves, but as he pursues Lupinar, he flashes in and out of his Jake Lockley persona back on Earth driving a taxi. Marc/Jake freezes in confusion and crashes his spaceship/taxi. In both realities, Frenchie is dead, but Marc/Jake has to keep going. Flashing to the surface of the moon, Marc is under attack from General Lupinar. Marc shoots Lupinar’s ship, but the damage sends the ship spiraling into Moon Base Alpha, opening the way for the Space Wolves to lay siege to the base.

Inside the base, Marc engages Lupinar in hand to hand fighting, but it’s too late. The Space Wolves are already in the base and about to take over. Lupinar kicks Marc down and bites his neck, presumably so he’ll turn into a Wolf as well. But instead, Marc opens his eyes and he’s Jake Lockley, his taxi isn’t crashed, and Frenchie isn’t dead on the inside of it. Jake walks over to head into Gena’s diner, but when he opens the door everyone on the inside is dead and the cops are there calling for Marc Spector to come out with his hands up.

I know, I know, it’s pretty confusing right? There’s a lot of persona switching and reality jumping, and I don’t know which part is real, if any of it is even real. I have to say I’m getting used to Francesco Francavilla and James Stokoe on art, but I really can’t wait until Greg Smallwood comes back. It seems like they have a different artist for each persona and reality, so I’m guessing Smallwood won’t be back until Marc Spector is Moon Knight once again.

This issue was a little bit down for me, just because it seemed like setup for more craziness and I don’t even have a guess as to what’s going on. It’s still really intriguing and I wish Marvel would take a DC approach and make this a bimonthly, but I would like to start getting some answers soon.

Bits and Pieces:

This is down issue for me, yet I’m still giving it an 8. That’s how good this series is. Jeff Lemire hasn’t let me down with this character yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he wraps all of this together. Seriously, read this book.

8/10
