Dillyn here back at you again with another Injustice review. I’ve been loving this story so far, it’s one of my favorite comics right now. Chapter 3 is part 1 of the “Sidekicks” story. Does it continue to impress or distress? Let’s take a look...
We start with Harley again, continuing her story throughout this fight against Superman’s Regime. From a wider shot, there doesn’t seem to be anyone she’s talking to again, no shadowy figure like in Chapter 2. Since the first chapter, she’s been plucking away at a small flower. Since this story is in her eyes, this also means we’re in her mind as we see that the flowers have cute faces. They’re in so much pain though from Harley plucking their pedals off. It’s funny but poor things. Still, the art continues to look so nice, bright yet dark.
In the beginning, we to see heroes fight each other. Next, Batman creates a pile of dead Robins, making it a goofy yet dark visual representation of Batman’s loss from battles. We also get a quick shot of what it appears to possibly be Barbara holding up a camera to The Joker pointing a gun at her, referencing the heck out of The Killing Joke.
The story continues with Harley getting drinks with her goons at Dead Shots!!, were she tries to get to know them, what makes them special, and their “origin story.” She still refers to them by the names she’s given them and not bothering to learn their real names. It’s hilarious and she’s so genuine about it, but the goons really don’t seem to care anyway. They toast to henchmen and are interrupted by a news story on TV reporting a peaceful protest turned riot.
We then see Ollie, Diana, Arthur, and Hal in costume on the rooftop across from the bar Harley exits from. One of her goons say he spots a Green Arrow imposter. Harley and her goons steal some motorcycles outside of the bar and drive off to the riot scene. The four heroes(?) talk about how it looks like Gotham that their in but talk about how they might have jumped into another dimension. They then leave to rooftop wondering which Earth they’re really in. I’m very interested in seeing what comes of this.
Harley and her goons get to the scene just in time for Sinestro to attack the protesters. Ollie, Diana, Arthur, and Hal are there as well and start to fight Sinestro. Harley takes her other half of her green pill, all she has left. She runs into battle with two car doors and tries out a tagline that doesn’t work out so well for her. She then beats up some of the Regime police with her goons.
She truly loves her new henchmen and can’t wait to see what they do and where they go with each other. She’s so happy now that she’s not with the Joker anymore and she can have henchmen that she can treat better than the Joker ever could. She wants to rename her gang and is working on it, to get that Joker name out of there. But then, Gary is shot in the chest by one of the police and goes down.
The chapter ends with Harley ready to throw some justice down on the cop who killed Gary. Chris Sebela continues to nail Harley’s character and Daniel Sampere’s art is wonderful and keeps the feel of the 2 previous artists. Harley’s face can be a bit off at times but it’s nothing too distracting.
Bits and Pieces:
I loved this chapter, as much as I’ve loved the series so far. “Sidekicks” Part 1 really delves into Harley’s love for her new goons. Let me just say, if you still haven’t jumped in, pick these 3 chapters up and follow it. The art is so nice and these writers have really captured Harley’s character so well as we continue her life post-Joker in this Injustice world.
9.5/10
