*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*
Who's ready for another mediocre issue of a superhero who should be wowing us month after month instead of making us wonder why the hell this series is still going on. Yeah, I may seem a bit harsh here, but this series has just been nonsense nonstop and besides for introducing Kent Nelson into the story, it's really made no strides in giving us a competent hero or even one that's likable....... I mean, Khalid is so underdeveloped that I don't know anything about him besides for the fact that he has aspirations of being a doctor, whines a lot and doesn't get any off of his girlfriend. That may be fine for some, but each issue just seems to be something thrown together that doesn't matter in the overall scheme of things. Like in the previous issue we saw Central Park overrun with mummies and while our hero did save a couple of people, he was primarily just trying to get to his girlfriend, while Kent Nelson did the heavy lifting of stopping the threat........... But I have no idea what the threat even was or how it happened. All I know is, at the end of the issue a scary glowing dude walked out of a portal and by the stink face he had on, he wasn't there for a party. Let's jump into this issue and see who old stink face was and what he wants out of Khalid.
Explain It!:
Our issue begins on a day when the sun refuses to rise and not like on one of those bad ass overcast days that I love because I'm very sensitive to the light to the point where my friends think I'm secretly a vampire, but one of those days where Osiris comes to town and apparently stopping the sun from rising is his bag. Now I'll tell you, initially I thought that this issue was going to be over in a matter of seconds because Kent Nelson goes to investigate the cause of this and comes upon Osiris........ who for all of his many years of magic and super heroics, has no idea who Osiris is and for as much as I think Kent Nelson can do anything, the Egyptian God quickly knocks our hero out and declares that his magic ain't shit. Things certainly don't look good for Khalid.
With all the shit that New York has faced since this series began, it's not hard to wonder why Khalid's parents believe that it's the end times and with that, they hope that their son comes home safe....... since both parents apparently just know about Khalid's superhero persona now and think that he's off doing something that will get him killed, but after Khalid returns home, I bet they wish that he had stayed out wherever he was because immediately Osiris shows up and smashes their house to bits. Yeah, it seems that Osiris has come to town because Anubis being the big wiener that he is, was all butt hurt that Khalid had beaten him and whined to Osiris about a mortal who was defying the will of the gods, making Osiris have to get up and go make an example of our current Doctor Fate.......... but all it takes to rectify the situation is Bastet showing back up even though she's left the mortal realm twice already because of death, so that she can tell Osiris that Anubis is lying. That's right, the whole issue is resolved by "Liar, liar, pants on fire" and Osiris declaring that Khalid is cool with him. With that the sun rises, Osiris bounces and Khalid talks to us about how if you do good things, good things will happen to you, but since I already watched "My Name is Earl", Jason Lee already taught me that lesson.
That's it for this issue of Doctor Fate and I swear each issue keeps giving us less and less, while also throwing some random Egyptian something or other at us, forcing me to go do some goddamn research because I'm a big dope and don't know things....... well, maybe some things, but not the hierarchy of Egyptian Gods....... yeah, it doesn't really matter for this issue, but I was seriously trying to get something out of this book, hence the research, but all I ended up getting is that this series doesn't matter at all, especially when our hero goes issue after issue without doing anything. I just want to be done with this and thankfully we only have two issues left. As for the art.......... I hate being a negative Nancy about everything, but the art style of Sonny Liew is just something that I'm not a fan of, but if you've been enjoying it this far, then you should totally dig it here......... It's just not for me.
Bits and Pieces:
This issue of Doctor Fate is just another in the long line of issues where our title character doesn't do shit and to make things worse, the former Doctor Fate is just as useless here. Really though, this is a story that just builds up to nothing and is a reminder of why I can't wait until this series is finally over. It's........... It's just not good and I'm just not a fan of the art style either.
5/10
I was super excited about this series when it first began. I must have dropped it after issue 4 or 5 because I got super pissed off when NOTHING happened. It's the most pointless story I have ever read. I like reading your reviews just to double check I was right all along. May the gods grant this book a swift and painful death.
ReplyDeleteYou missed that Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Scott McCloud and some other comics creators make a cameo on page 2. Anyone know who the guy holding the baseball is?
