This is another book that I fell in love with at first sight and while I didn't know all of the characters, Al Ewing did a great job of not only introducing them, but writing a story that made we want to come back to see more of them. I'm not going to delay anymore, but instead get right down to brass tacks. Here is my review for New Avengers #14...
The issue opens with Sunspot in Avenger's Base Two doing his thing when he is confronted by Omnitronicus. I love the "don't make me spell it out" joke and the fun continues as Omni and De Costa exchange quips which leads to a techno battle of sorts.
Meanwhile, the New Revengers are also doing their thing which is breaking and entering as well as kicking some ass. It all leads to White Tiger vs White Tiger and while the Revengers version (Angela Del Toro) is way more powerful than Ava Ayala, Ava is still so kick ass.
We then head off to see what I was waiting for since last issue...Skar and evil Reed Richards with Dr. Ho. It's a quick scene, but we find out that Richards has been watching the team for a while now, but also that what he's been seeing hasn't been on the up and up.
The issue swipes to Cannonball and his awesome Stealth Zero heading to save Songbird. He blasts into the Helicarrier and Power Man takes over big time. He kicks ass with the greatest of ease and they find Songbird. That's when she tells them that she gave up the goods on A.I.M. just as the gang is confronted by Dum Dum Dugans. Again, that is plural on purpose.
That starts a countdown until De Costa and Avenger's Base Two are both history. While the seconds tick away, De Costa is still "dancing" with Omnitronicus and the issue ends with Sunspot getting a robotic helping hand with a minute left before destruction.
Al Ewing is so busy juggling a huge cast of characters that it is almost impossible for much to really happen to move the story forward. In fact, I'm surprised he manages to have anything happen at all. There really are too many damn characters in this book at the moment and I can only hope things get tightened up eventually. As far as this issue being a Civil War II tie-in...they do mention Ulysses, but not much more than that.
While I think there are too many characters, Paco Medina does a damn good job making them all look great. This is a really good looking book and it's a good thing this month because it carries the issue.
Bits and Pieces:
This issue is a three to four level setup issue and really doesn't move forward much at all. This may be the most crowded book I've ever read and while Paco Medina makes sure the art side of things is awesome, the story just can't get any traction before moving to the next character. I hope things can come together a bit more because the characters and the story really do interest me.
