While most of the Civil War tie-ins I've read have been pretty much nonsense....... I think that this one just comes in short of Deadpool's in its irreverence because it does have something to actually tie it in.... I'm just happy as hell that it wasn't much and we just get to see Bobbi being Bobbi. This whole Civil War thing feels like such a thrown together mess to me and while I may not be the most savvy person when it comes to Marvel Comics anymore, the first Civil War came off as something epic and important, while this one feels more like....... "are we seriously fighting about this?" Not that it seems to matter here, but when we last saw our hero she was full of a virus that had mutated her and given her powers and while she could have cured herself, Bobbi felt that she was fine just the way she was. Let's jump into this issue and see Bobbi on a little working vacation as she tries to deal with Clint Barton being tried for the murder of Bruce Banner. Let's check it out.
Explain It!:
Our issue begins with Bobbi allowing herself to walk into a setup or a trap, when she receives an invitation to a cruise, all expenses paid, so that whoever this mysterious gift-giver is can give her exonerating information concerning Clint Barton. So yeah, Bobbi and Clint aren't together anymore, but Mockingbird isn't about to let her ex-husband get screwed on a murder wrap, so she takes the tickets and when she gets aboard the ship.......... she finds nerds!
That's right, it seems that this cruise is all about praising Hawkeye, who was originally supposed to be the keynote speaker, but now that he's facing prison, it looks like we just have ourselves a nerds gone wild situation, where cosplayers and D&D players....... are doing whatever it is that they do....... not to mention this ship also has a Corgi convention going on, that Hunter seems to be all about. Yeah, he's a spy so he's probably not actually all about loving Corgis, but who really knows? The rest of the issue turns into missed meetings between Bobbi and this informant....... who is all about donning a horse head mask for their rendezvous. After meeting after meeting where nothing is really revealed about what this mystery man has on Clint, Bobbi eventually lets the cat out of the bag that she knows who he is, but we don't ever really get the idea about whether this strange strange man actually has anything of interest.
In the end, after a bunch of flirtatious conversations between Bobbi and Hunter, Bobbi eventually gets Hunter to swipe this mystery man's cabin key card....... and after we definitely know that sex is off the table, the two break into his room and find the horse headed man shot to death with the tag "HULK LIVES" painted on the wall.
That's it for this issue of Mockingbird and like every other issue of this series, the humor is there and hits just right and even though we have this whole silly situation going on between Bobbi and a would-be whistle blower, there's also a ton of heart here and my favorite scene in this entire issue is so simple in that it's just Bobbi sitting on her bed, listening to the news of Clint's trial and the next panel is her crying a bit, until she has to compose herself to answer the door to her room. It's done so well and whether Bobbie wanted to let us know how she actually felt through her normal sarcastic inner-monologues or not, it was all spelled out there and was perfect......... Ton of silliness though and with all the super serious things going on in Civil War II right now, this was a nice break from that, while still being a wee bit relevant. I love the fantastic art and colors in this book and the writing is always so good, it's just the situations can get a little too over the top at times and while this issue certainly has that going on, it did it in a emotionally moving way.
Bits and Pieces:
Mockingbird continues to be one of my favorite books that Marvel is putting out and while the situations that Bobbie Morse finds herself in are normally a wild ride of nonsense, this issue does a great job in balancing its over the top nature with some real character depth that I really appreciated. We've got great art and great writing......... So what are you waiting for? Pick up Mockingbird already and give it a try.
7.8/10
