Night of The Living Virus

While we at Weird Science broke our DC Comics vows and started Marvel Mondays...... and just dove into the publisher head first without really know what we were getting into, I found that through all the titles that Marvel offered, this is the diamond in the rough that stood above all others. Yeah, I figured I'd give Mockingbird a try because with a title like that, it couldn't be that difficult to get into and I wouldn't have to take it too seriously....... Well, after reading an issue I realized I didn't know what the hell I was talking about because goddamn is this book just rich with content and it forced me to go back and read the entire series........ and I'm so happy I did. With this Puzzle Box story arc that's going on, we're following Bobbi Morse in a day of her life from issue to issue as we find out as she does what exactly is happening to her now that she's been infected by a virus that's mutating her. Let's jump into this issue and see what her Doctors think, now that we've finally caught up to the end of the events of the first issue. Let's check it out.
Explain It!:
Our issue begins with Agent 19 just kicking a whole shit ton of zombie ass, as her Doctors cower in fear and explain to all of us gentle readers what the fuck is going on and why there are zombies just running amok in this SHIELD health facility. If you've been reading Mockingbird you'll remember in the first issue how these Docs have been taking blood from Bobbi and just doing a whole lot of tests, trying to gauge the affects of the virus she contracted.......... and as it turns out they've also been injecting the virus into cadavers....... because you know....... SCIENCE! So yeah, it seems that these infected cadavers are drawn to their virus' original host: Bobbi and the only way to shut them down is to get to another floor of the facility and get the anti-virus and inject it into the host body........ again: Bobbi.
This quest leads Mockingbird throughout the complex and eventually meeting up with other SHIELD patients Howard the Duck and Spider-Man, who help our title character get to her destination, which leads to a bunch more zombie ass kicking and sarcastic banter along the way.......... not to mention me thinking that it's weird as hell that Miles Morales has chicken pox at his age...... That shit seems dangerous.
In the end, our heroes come to the room they were searching for and we get another revelation from our first issue, where we saw Bobbi making ping pong balls disappear...... which just seemed weird as hell at the time........ and while it's still pretty weird, we see that the virus giving her powers was actually sending them to the infected cadavers as a way to tell her that the virus was out and about. After Bobbi goes and tells us for what seemed like the tenth time that life started with a virus, she decides that she's not sick and doesn't want to be cured of whatever it is inside of her and destroys the anti-virus........... but since she's not completely nuts, she does insist that the facility be put under quarantine until the life cycle of the virus in these cadavers is over.
That's it for this issue of Mockingbird and after reading this issue it really solidifies in my mind that you need to be reading every issue in order to know what's going on in this series. While that might seem like a bad thing at face value, with that whole idea that every issue is somebody's first issue, it does make this one of the most unique series being put out now by a major publisher. Even in the writer's little prologue page in the beginning, she tells us that there is so much going on in this series that you can read them in any order because there are callbacks to previous issues and even issues that aren't out yet as a way to make your reading experience that much better because it warrants a second or a third look........ which I love. That being said though, this installment of Mockingbird was just a little too punchy for how I've been enjoying the series and I felt that the dialog just wasn't up to the bar that Chelsea Cain has set. Now, I'm not saying that this issue isn't enjoyable because I still had a ton of fun, but because of what we've had so far, I just put this series on a pedestal that I expect each issue to be as strong as the previous one.............. and really because I'm a jerk, who just wants what I want. As with every other issue the art was fantastic and I find myself looking forward to this book more than some DC Comics that we normally do around here.

If it's a fight your looking for........ well, you'll certainly find it here as we see our hero Bobbi Morse kicking ass and taking names and by taking names I mean trying to hold back from puking because goddamn is she in the thick of it with some nasties in this one. We've got great callbacks here and a ton of action and cameos, I just found that the dialog was a little stiff in this issue since our hero spent most of it talking about the same thing.
