Good Help is Hard to Find

I enjoy reading Deadpool titles because, despite the outrageous situations he gets himself into and the off the wall healing factor he possesses, the character himself can be quite relatable. I mean think about it, who can’t relate to someone who despite their best intentions just can’t get out of their own way most days? Hell, if I had a healing factor and was willing to take punch, after punch, after punch I could very well be Deadpool or at least give it a whirl. With that being said, let’s all just keep reading and see what I’m, I mean Deadpool, is up to in this month’s book, shall we?
When we last left Deadpool and the Mercs, they were all locked in a safe with each other and not getting along too well. The Mercs uncovered evidence that Deadpool was funneling funds meant for them to Captain America’s Unity Squad. To counter the move, the Mercs, went on the hunt to destroy their contracts stored in a secret New Jersey bank safe. Deadpool gave chase to stop them and this is how a Slumber Party with lots and lots of weapons gets started. Things obviously escalate quickly when you have guns, share close quarters, and disagree about things. This chain of events eventually leads to Deadpool whipping it out. Get your mind out of the gutter people; “it” in this instance is a flash-bang grenade...or was it?!? Unfortunately, it was.
As the cops arrive to investigate, a release timer conveniently pops the safe open, just in time for everyone to hightail it outside leaving Deadpool holding the hot potato (flash bang). Inevitably, the grenade goes off leaving Deadpool blind as a Daredevil (Note to Reggie: Daredevil is blind!). This allows the Mercs to take advantage, giving Slapstick the opportunity to take a mallet straight to his gut. The gut shot makes the Merc with the Mouth toss his cookies, in his mask, which sets off a hilarious chain of events, all involving vomit. Basically, for a few panels the book turns into an episode of Tosh .O and I’m A-Ok with that!
As the fight continues, the cops try to calm the situation to no avail which leads to S.H.I.E.L.D. arriving to subdue everyone involved. Minutes later, the Mercs are corralled and sent to the Allendale, NJ courthouse to deal with the consequences for their juvenile behavior. That's a lesson to you kid's out there...there are always consequences!
Deadpool fabricates a story to the judge about Kang attacking and everyone thinking they were brainwashed into being Hydra Agents to save their butts. This gives the judge the out he needs to let them get away with a slap on the wrist. Punishment is assigned in the form of covering damage costs as well as a restraining order forcing the team to stay the hell out of New Jersey. Let’s face it, the second half of sentence isn’t much of a punishment at all. That a lesson to you kid's...New Jersey sucks!
As our issue winds down in typical Deadpool fashion, we see his world coming down all around him. He releases the unhappy Mercs for Money from their contacts, gets played on a visit to his Baby Moms and his daughter, then arrives home to find his wife Shiklah in bed getting friendly with Jack the Wolf-Man (A.K.A. Werewolf by Night, if I’m not mistaken). After a horrible day this is all just too much for Deadpool to bear and he goes to the wall for his shotgun going full Guilty Conscience mode on Werewolf by Night. Eminem would be proud!
This is a suitable comic with a good story and decent art. Duggan has a good voice for writing Deadpool so there are always a few good chuckles to be found. However, I feel like you could safely skip these Civil War tie-in issues and just pick the book back up when our main story resumes without having missed much.
Bits and Pieces:
Deadpool has been dealing with his own version of a Civil War, and while it’s a pleasant distraction from the slog the main event has become, I look forward to the book more now that the team infighting has come to an end to see where we go from here.
