Welcome back to my weekly list of things I love that you should love too for the week of May 30, 2016.
1. Lady Dynomite: What do you get when you combine the comedic genius of Maria Bamford with the TV stylings of Arrested Development's Mitch Hurwitz? Well perfection of course, in this case that perfect is the Netflix series Lady Dynamite. Lady Dynamite is the perfect blend of Maria Bamford's voice with Mitch Hurwitz's aesthetic. Shit is perfect television joy. Maria Bamford is a god damned national treasure.
2. Zilla Rocca - Anything I Touch I Bruise (Remix Album): My guess is that you have never heard of Zilla Rocca before because your brand of nerd is comic book, not rap. Don't let that scare you away from one of the more interesting voices in the indie rap scene. Zilla is drenched in noir stylings and scotch. His remixes add layers of complexity and class to already brilliant works. Listening to the Zilla Remix is like watching Elmore Leonard rewrite Ferris Buehler's Day Off, it was already perfect, but now its more layered and has more muscle cars and shit.
3. Over The Edge: Growing up in the early days of HBO, before they had bullshit ass shows like Game of Thrones, they used to show all sorts of shitty b-movies, that because of their constant rotation, became staples of my childhood. Movies like 3 O'Clock High, Bloodsport, Commando and Over The Edge. Over The Edge takes place in the fictional suburban development of New Granada, a place that "well meaning white folk" fled to from the decaying cities of 1970s America. Turns out no place is safe because as anyone who grew up in a bullshit ass suburb knows, teen boredom leads to drinking, sex, drugs, vandalisms and violence. Over The Edge was the coming of age film for my heavy metal addled mind. Great film staying relative unknowns including Matt Dillon in his very first roll. Quick aside. I was at my a birthday part of one of my 6 year old daughters friends and her dad had the poster hanging in the hall. I figured that it would be a great conversation starter (if you have kids you know how dreadful talking to other parents is, so when you find common ground you cling to that shit) I told him how much I loved the movie thinking we could kill a few minutes chatting about this cult film. He laugh and said, "I was in the movie" the second he said it, I saw his character in his 40 something face. I was immediately starstruck and he is now my spirit animal.
4. Off!: The Circle Jerks sits comfortably in the top 5 of my all time favorite band list. So you could imagine how overjoyed I was when I learned that Circle Jerk front man had a new group called Off! and that it didn't even slightly suck, in fact it was pure perfection. It was everything you would hope the man that made the classic album Group Sex would evolve into. Off! is going to become your new favorite band....unless you are an asshole or something.
