Lobo #12 Review

Watch Me Whip...

Written by: Cullen Bunn and Frank Barbiere
Art by: Robson rocha, Ruy Jose, Blond and Travis Lanham
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

While this book has been far from perfect, it has gotten better by leaps and bounds over the last handful of issues.  Sure, having a cool crossover with Sinestro never hurts, but I think it's something else.  Cullen Bunn finally let Lobo be Lobo.  No generic teammates, no pseudo angst...just ass kicking Lobo.  It's a shame because just as this book was becoming the book that Lobo fans would recognize and possibly enjoy, DC announced it's cancellation.  So, what does Cullen Bunn have in store for the Main Man's swan song?  Let's find out...

Top 5 Fridays: DC Comics Mini-Series I Want To See

Welcome back to this week's Top 5 Friday! This month will mark the end of the first three mini-series that came spiraling out of the DC You as well as the beginning of new ones. Bat-Mite concluded its run this week, Superman: American Alien begins next week, with Bizarro and Green Lantern: Lost Army finishing up on the 18th while Batman Europa begins. It has become clear that DC is going through a mini-series craze that is trying to get readers interested in their comics. In the coming months we'll be getting Raven, Deadshot/Katana, and Metamorpho just to name a few. With all these new mini-series, I began to think to myself, "What mini-series would I want to see?" and thats what we'll be going over today. As per usual this is my personal list, so apologies if you don't like an idea. ENOUGH TALK! Lets begin!

Life Is But A Meme, Sweetheart

Written By: Rob Williams
Art By: Mike Dowling, Quinton Winter, Clem Robins
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

*Non-Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

What if we lived in a world where people were mesmerized by handheld liquid crystal display screens that constantly beamed news and the whereabouts of our friends and family to our flickering eyes? What’s that you say? “Too long; didn’t read?” That’s the problem with the world today, if you can’t condense your thoughts into nine or fewer syllables, then they’re not even worth being thunk. Why, when I was a boy we’d have to read a thousand words of preamble just before we got to the Nutrition Information panel on our breakfast cereal, and we liked it by gum! If you’ve only got enough attention span to read either this review or the comic book Unfollow, then go read Unfollow. But if you’ve got it in you to know my thoughts about the issue, then read on!

Bat-Mite #6 Review and *SPOILERS*

They Mite Be Giants

Written By: Dan Jurgens
Art By: Corin Howell, Andres Ponce, Mike Atiyeh, Tom Napolitano
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's the end of our mite-y six issue mini and that means it's time to quit fixing heroes and finally put an end to Gridlock's nefarious schemes....... or really, it means whatever the hell the creators want it to mean because this is Bat-Mite and it doesn't matter where we start or end as long as it's fun and irrelevant.  There's been ups and down to this mini, but for the most part it's been a fun ride and I really enjoyed seeing Bat-Mite get into some trouble, while also mixing it up with some of my favorite heroes.  Let's see if we have as much fun now that the heroes are done and it's Mite Vs. Gridlock.  Let's check it out.

Midnighter #6 Review

Not the Worst

Written by: Steve Orlando
Art by: Aco, Hugo Petrus and Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 5, 2015

I have not been a big fan of this book, but I am not going to apologize for that.  While I loved the first issue, this book has really gone downhill for me.  The main problems have been Steve Orlando's awful dialogue and the fact that I don't like Midnighter as a character.  Before you start sending an accusatory tweet my way, it has nothing to do with his sexual orientation one bit.  In fact, that's the one thing that I like about him because it really feels like the only thing Orlando has taken time to develop.  Midnighter comes across as shallow, selfish and just self-centered.  Sure he can kick some major ass, but at the end of the day, he comes off as a jerk.  A jerk in a book that has no real direction after four issues.  Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I'll tell you that this issue is one of the better ones in the series so far.  It's not as good as the premiere issue, but it's a step in the right direction. Before I spoil everything here, let's get on with the review...

*Non-Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

They say that which does not kill you makes you stronger. Looking at the members of the Survivors’ Club, that’s a terrifying thought. Turns out that overcoming some horrifying, traumatic event doesn’t necessarily equate to you becoming a good or likeable person. Our story continues right where we left our happy club, now having gone their separate ways to pursue their own agendas. What are those agendas? What secrets about the members of this club will be revealed in this issue? Is there a secret handshake and maybe a funny hat to signify allegiance to this club? Probably not, but you’ll find out if you read on!

What happens when a being with the powers of a god becomes a god? Well, they probably don’t have to spring for a new wardrobe. So it is with Superman, who becomes the god of strength in the pages of the Justice League during that title’s recent event, The Darkseid War. Does absolute power corrupt Superman absolutely? Or does it just corrupt him a little bit while leaving his sense of fair bartering intact? I guess we’ll never know! Run, Rabbit Run

Written By: Rob Williams
Art By: Jesús Merino, Guy Major, Saida Temofonte
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

*Non-Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

As the English poet John Donne wrote: “Death be not proud, for Jack Kirby hath rendered you as a cross-country skier.” While I think the New Gods are cool, I’ve long felt the Black Racer was one of the silliest of Jack’s creations, a sort of analogue to Silver Surfer but less cool and interesting in nearly every way. Perhaps a little of that Central City magic will help the Racer get hep, as the kids say. We’re going to find out, because Barry Allen has fused with the Black Racer to become the harbinger of Death in this issue of Justice League: The Darkseid War – The Flash! Read on to prolong your life!

Harley Quinn and Power Girl # 5 Review and *SPOILERS*

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One

*Non-Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but what if that man has no stomach? And instead of being a man, he’s a bafflingly massive semi-robotic head? And instead of food, he eats the collected sorrows of vast solar systems? I know what you’re thinking: I can change him. Well, turns out you might be right in this particular instance, as Harley Quinn and Power Girl go against that galactic consumer of misery, the Harvester. Will they succeed? Or do they get…harvested? Since this is a prequel, then we know they don’t. But read on anyway, one of them might skin her knee or something.

Detective Comics #46 Review

Treading Aqueous Humor

Written by: Peter J. Tomasi
Art by: Marcio Takara, Chris Sotomayer and Wes Abbott
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date:November 4, 2015

Last week started something that I bet Eric would never happen...Jim Gordon's Mecha Batman became a part of the Justice League.  You see, they needed a detective and I guess Barry was too shy to speak up because I think he could have fit the bill just fine.  I still think that it was all about the marketing deal they signed which may or may not have small print that says, "No Batman-No Deal"!
Back to the book, last week's cliffhanger left us in the Himalayas staring at a giant skeleton of some sort and wondering what the hell was going on.  I guess I need a detective too.  So, what is going on?  Let's find out...

Green Arrow #46 Review and *SPOILERS*

Breaking Bones

Written By: Ben Percy
Art By: Patrick Zircher, Fabrizio Fiorentino, Gabe Eltaeb, Rob Leigh
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Oh Boy!  It's time to get back to some bone loving, wolf-napping cults and the stories they encompass...... sadly, that story is Green Arrow, where I learned last issue that Oliver Queen doesn't seem to give a shit about people finding out his identity.  Yeah, I haven't been a fan of this story arc...... or the previous one and I'm mad as hell because there's no reason that a Green Arrow book shouldn't be fun and I've done nothing but dread this title since August.  Let me fill you in real fast.  We've got ourselves a bone obsessed cult, who kidnapped Oliver's wolf: George, after we spent an issue hearing his secret origins from a psychic and then Tarantula and Green Arrow made their way to Mexico to get him back............even though they were just in Seattle.  Bone Cults move faster than Flash apparently, but it's time to get into this, even if we're not happy about it.  Let's check out this issue of Green Arrow and hope for the best.

Batman and Robin Eternal #5 Review

A Strange Quest

Written by: Steve Orlando
Art by: Scot Eaton, Ronan Cliquet, Steve Pugh, Wayne Faucher, Gabe Eltaeb and Dave Sharpe
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

Boy, this series had a great first issue, right?  Dick, Jason and Todd hanging out like brothers, Harper making a grand reappearance and a cliffhanger with Batman holding a smoking gun?!?  I jumped in head first and was ready for the ride of a lifetime.  So, what the hell happened?  While I've read that others have (dare I say it) enjoyed the next three issues even more than that #1, I have not.  No sir, I don't like it...is what I'd say if I were a cartoon horse, but since I'm a real human, I'll just say I've been disappointed.  Believe me, nothing would make me happier than to be able to give every issue of this series a perfect score because I love the characters, am intrigued with the story and would love to be looked upon as a super positive person.  I really would.  I guess it's too late for the last three issues, but did this one make things right and turn my frown upside down?  Let's find out...

Green Lantern #46 Review and *SPOILERS*

Back To The Source

Written By: Robert Venditti
Art By: Billy Tan, Mark Irwin, Alex Sinclair, Dave Sharpe
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: November 4, 2015

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's time to finish up this "planets turning to stone" story, but it's weird because it seems like it just began....... yeah, we've had a bunch of issues so far, but it wasn't until Hal went after Black Hand in the previous issue that it felt like it finally had a direction.  We've been dealing with body modification loving Thanagarians, the Green Lantern Corps missing and this whole planet stoning thing and I guess even though it hasn't felt really all together, it's been a single road leading to this.  In the last issue we had Hal Jordan go after Black Hand, who apparently is responsible for all the Medusa-ing in the Universe, even though it feels a little out of place for everything that we've seen and after beating him to...... well, just beating him I guess, it looked like Hal was planning on putting him down for good...... however one might go about doing that.  Let's jump into this issue and see how all of this plays out.  Let's check it out.

Weird Science DC Comics Podcast Episode 43: Keeping It Real Like the Man of Steel

Jim and Eric get together on Halloween Night, but kind of ignore that fact to talk about DC Comics as usual.  They go over all the DC Comics News, Comic books and even get to talk about Vic Sage's porn addiction, Mythbrawl and why Batman is the most selfish god of them all.  While they may not be huge fans of every book they talk about, they keep it real like the Man of Steel.  I'm not sure what that means, but I like the sound of it!

Deathstroke #11 Review

Badass...Hey!

Written by: Tony S. Daniel and James Bonny
Art by: Tyler Kirkham, Arif Prianto and and Dave Sharpe
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: October 28, 2015

I have been a fan of this book and have stuck with it through some tough patches to get to where we are now.  Having just finished the God Slayer arc, we open this month with what feels like a good jumping on point for new readers.  Of course, the best jumping on point for a Deathstroke book has to be Slade going up against the Suicide Squad and that's what we get.  So, does a good jumping on point equal a good issue?  Let's find out...

Justice League 3001 #5 Review

Dark Knights

Written by: J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen
Art by: Howard Porter, Hi-FI and Rob Leigh
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: October 28, 2015

I don't know about you, but it feels like so long since I read the last issue of Justice League 3001. While it was an odd issue dealing mainly with Flash (Teri version) and Mirror Master, I enjoyed it for the same reason I enjoy this book in general...a quick, fun story with great art (this one by fill-in Scott Kolins) that didn't move mountains, but made me smile.  At the end of the day, that's why this book is one of my favorites and why I look forward to it each and every month.  I may be a miserable old man, but sometimes it's nice to smile.  Did I do that after reading this issue?  Let's find out...

Written By: Garth Ennis
Art By: John McCrea, John Kalisz, Pat Brosseau
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: October 28, 2015

*Non-Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

We’re pulling into the next-to-last leg of this title’s whirlwind tour, after seeing some of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes being assaulted with vomit, physical violence, and embarrassing sex. Sounds a lot like Jim’s band days in college! This time, we get a little introspective with the leader of Section Eight, good ol’ Six Pack, and considering the state of his outsides, going deeper is probably not a good idea. Will Six Pack gain the ethereal knowledge he needs to lead Section Eight to glory, or are we going to lose our lunches watching this guy puke and poop all the time? It’s not an either/or thing! Read on!

New Suicide Squad #13 Review

Explosive!

Written by: Sean Ryan
Art by: Philippe Briones, Blond and Dave Sharp
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date:October 28, 2015

I've been a fan of this rebooted version of the Suicide Squad that Sean Ryan has been cooking up since issue one.  The best thing, however, is that the book just keeps getting better and better.  In fact, it has gone from being an action packed guilty pleasure of mine to a character driven top of the pile book.  That's right...the New Suicide Squad is one of my favorite books and while some of my other favorites (if you listen to our Podcast, you know what they are) have been up and down since the June introduction of the DC You, it has been consistently good.  Does that go for this latest issue?  Let's find out...

Sinestro #16 Review and *SPOILERS*

It's Good To Be The King

Written By: Cullen Bunn
Art By: Brad Walker, Ethan Van Sciver, Drew Hennessy, Jason Wright, Dave Sharpe
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: October 28, 2015

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Now maybe Lobo is still out there collecting different Lantern hands across the Universe like the psychopath that he is, but Sinestro doesn't have time to wait for his ass, not with the Paling still out and about sucking people's emotion dry and converting all emotional non-believers.  So while Sinestro might be done Rising and all that, he still has a long way to go to make sure that his reign is supreme out there in the big wide Universe.  It's time to call in some help and get to the bottom of this Paling situation, so let's jump into this issue and see how the fear monger himself goes about taking out this mysterious enemy.  Let's check it out.
