Reach for the Sky

When the new round of books were announced, Eric and myself had a draft to decide who would get what and Bizarro was one of my first picks.  It didn't matter that I thought Eric would pass it by, I needed to make sure I got it.  I am a Bizarro fan and the promise of a light hearted take on the character had me sold in the beginning and the sneak peek showing him and Jimmy Olsen on a road trip to Canada (Bizarro America) showed me I had made a wise choice.  The first two issues were great fun and I really can't think of anything bad to say about it.  Last issue ended with our two heroes (three if you count Colin...which I do) meeting up with Chastity Hex in a real, honest to goodness ghost town that had me wondering what the hell was going to happen this month.  Well, what the hell happened and is it any good?  Let's find out...

What You Can Do For Your Country

Oh, we're continuing our Combat time with this story as we check back in on Supergirl and Stargirl.  In the previous issue where we dealt with these characters, we saw that Stargirl wanted to become one of the Soviet's premier fighter pilots by becoming apart of the Night Witches.  Initially, it looked like she was going to get her wish and with her sister Supergirl at her side helping to make her dream a reality, it looked liked everything would be pinatas and RC cola.  Too bad that Stargirl's plane malfunctioned and Supergirl had to reveal her powers to save her, which led to the Soviets claiming that the two were traitors and that they would be arrested.  My biggest gripe with the previous issue was how similar our two leading ladies looked and hopefully I'll have an easier time distinguishing the two here.  Let's jump into Soviet Russia and see how Supergirl and Stargirl fair now that the cat's out of the bag about what Kara can do.  let's check it out.

King of The Ring

Let's get back to the 60's where Batman might have just met his match with the introduction of Bane.  That's right the virtue-less venom vacuuming villain has made his debut into the Batman '66 continuity and as much as you just rolled your eyes at that alliteration, that shit was hard and I did it all for you....... don't roll your eyes at gifts!  Not only do we have Bane making his debut, but it seems that he's teamed up with The Riddler and besides for the theft of a crystal skull, it seems that Bane might have taken a cue from Knightfall and broken our wholesome Batman's back.  Let's jump into this issue and see how bad the damage to our Caped Crusader is and what The Riddler and Bane have planned with their new acquisition.  Let's check it out.

Sidekick

While I thought that the "Suicide Blues" arc ended on a strange note, the addition of Calendar Man really got me excited.  I enjoy him as a villain normally, but I love him in the Arkham video game series.  His Easter Egg in Arkham City is one of my favorites of all time and I can't wait to see how Tomasi uses him in this book.  I think I'm going to have to wait a couple of weeks at least because this week kicks off a two-part story called "The Apprentice" and if the awesome Francis Manapul cover didn't clue you in, it's a Robin story.  More specifically, it's a Tim Drake Robin story.  Did the beginning chapter get me excited for more to come, or does this arc seem like filler before getting back to the main story?  Let's find out...

Top 5 Fridays: DC Comics Characters/Teams That Can Help In The Darkseid War

Welcome to this week's edition of Top 5 Fridays! If you have been keeping up with the current story arc in Justice League, you would know that the Darkseid War has finally begun and the Anti-monitor prepares to fight him. This story has been building since the beginning of the New 52, and it seems these two are equally matched and ready to destroy everything. Obviously that can't happen, but what can we do when even the Justice League is caught off guard by the strength of both sides. The Dying of The Light

Our Green Lantern Corps have been transported to the Universe that existed before our own........well, at least the stars of this series have....... haven't really seen any other Lanterns kicking about, but we'll just assume that all of our heroes are at least in the same Universe.  So with that in mind, add to it that they have gained a young Krona to their party and Guy Gardner rocking a red and green ring simultaneously and you'd think that we'd have a bad ass story where our heroes are up against forces they don't understand on their quest to find a way home.  Well, it's been pretty lackluster so far and besides for each issue adding another character to the mix, we haven't really gotten anything substantial that makes this a must read Lantern title.  Hopefully that changes here as we saw at the closing of the previous issue that Relic is out and about and knowing our heroes' history with him and how he loathes people that drain the light from the Universe, this might be something worth reading.  Let's check it out.

We're All...

I am not going to sit here and tell you that Doomed is a perfect book.  Seriously, is there really such a thing?  What I will tell you, however, is that I enjoy the hell out of it.  Scott Lobdell is some sort of magician because he took a story event that I really didn't like, came up with a story idea I thought was ridiculous and made it into a fun book I already look forward to each month.  That's some black magic voodoo going on there, my friends.  It's all about the character work that Lobdell is putting into Reiser, but also the supporting cast that make this book go.  That continues this month and even though I want to find out more about Doomed (we really need a better name for the Monster...how about "Monster"?!?), I don't mind that being a slow burn while the rest of the book is so good.  I don't want to give too much away in this introduction paragraph, so let's get on with the review.

Stretching The Truth

Okay, it's time to get back into Secret Six and after the odd ass previous issue, I hope that this is able to move forward from where we left off in issue #3 with this not feeling too forced in trying to cover everything that's gone down.......... that being said, I do hope that we get some answers that make sense though too.  At this point in the story we have our Secret Six team hiding out in the burbs of Gotham at Big Shot's house, but the hiding might not be working out for them as much as they would have liked.  They've had mercs working for Mockingbird track them down and in the cliffhanger to the third issue, we saw that Big Shot might be working for Mockingbird and that nothing is as it appears to be.  Mostly, Big Shot probably being Elongated Man and Mockingbird actually being Riddler........ yeah, that's all odd, but let's get into this issue and find out what's what.  Let's check it out.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Who's up for another round of Doctor Fate?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Yeah, that's how I've been feeling about this series because even though I was originally gung ho for a title featuring the Fate Man himself, this version just isn't cutting it for me.  In the previous issue we had our new Doctor Fate: Khalid Nassour take on the helm, but where you'd expect awesomeness to come from that, instead we had him whining about how none of this could be real and him possibly killing a plane full of people...... that he didn't seem to really care about at all.  Yeah, this Fate isn't really working for me, but hopefully this all changes here because I'm going in fresh and expecting the best because I really want to like a title featuring Doctor Fate.  Let's jump into this issue and see if my sweet emotions will pay off or if I'm simply disappointed again.  Let's check it out.

Rubbing Off On Nobody

Damian continues his atonement for his Year of Blood that his mother and grandfather put him through before he became a hero under his father's tutelage.  In the previous issue we saw Damian on one such Quantum Leap like mission where he was trying to put right something that he once wronged and during this quest, he was met by the daughter of Nobody, the merc that Damian killed at the beginning of Batman and Robin.  Seeking vengeance for her father's death, this new Nobody planned on taking Damian's head, but seeing the good that the Boy Wonder was doing made her hold off her vengeance so she could help him along his way so at least something good could come out of the Al Ghul bloodline........... after Damian is done his journey though, she totally plans on killing him.  So we've got the son of Batman, the daughter of Nobody and a big ass bat monster as we continue this series and see what Damian plans on fixing next.  Let's check it out.

Not a Pot to Penis In

I want to like this book, really!  I was one of the loudest supporters of the awesome Harley.Power Girl arc in the normal Harley solo book and said then that DC should put the two in their own teamup book.  Well, I got what I wished for and I hope nobody blames me.  It's not that the book has been bad, it just hasn't been good.  I don't know what happened between Coney Island and the Lustox Moon, but someone forgot to pack the fun.  I can't explain it, but the jokes are there, but in this book, they all seem to fall flat.  Every month I hope that the book elevates itself to the level of it's source material, but I keep walking away disappointed.  Maybe this is the issue that changes everything.  Maybe this is the issue that restores my faith in the potential of this team up.  Maybe...I'll get on with my review.  Yes, yes I will.

A Twist of Fate

Wonder Woman has been a title that a lot of people have talked shit about since it started.  It seems that no matter who is on the title, the fans are always quick to say "That's not my Wonder Woman" and even though I've only recently taken over reviewing duties on this title; I have to say, What the hell is everyone complaining about?  I've been really getting into this series and I have high hopes of what it will bring in the future.  In the previous issue, we had Wonder Woman taking on her new foe Aegeus, who annoyingly believes that he deserves to be God of War more than Diana and wants to kill her in order to take it.  Of course Strife is behind this mess and if setting up this whiny douche with a magical bow and arrow and a Pegusus wasn't enough, she also went and fucked with Donna Tory's head.  So while Wonder Woman is forced to go up against Aegeus, Strife talked Donna into seeking out the Three Fates so that she could get them to cut her thread, thus ending her guilt ridden life.  Hopefully our proper God of War can take Aegeus down and stop her sister from doing something that will ruin our chances of getting a Wonder Woman/ Donna Troy team up.  Let's check it out.

Good Evening Cleveland!

The DC You is still in it's infancy, but it's already had it's share of surprises and disappointments.  Black Canary fits both categories.  I'm surprised that a re imagining of Dinah Lance as the lead singer in a rock band is so good and disappointed more people haven't jumped on the Blank Canary trolley yet.  I'd love to believe that the cream always rises to the top, but that rarely happens in real life, let alone in this make believe hobby of ours.  I'm not saying that Black Canary is on the brink of getting canceled, I just know that in a prefect world, it would be selling gangbusters.  I'll try to leave the sales pitch to the powers that be and get on with my review.  Last issue of Black Canary continued Brenden Fletcher's slow burn introduction of the Band.  It's been fun getting to know the group as they get to know each other and Ditto is already one of my favorite characters in the DC You.  All the while, they've been on the run from shadow monsters and mysterious black ops agents and the issue ended with it getting very personal for Dinah in particular.  One of the mysterious agents was...Kurt Lance!  Mind blown.  So, it's an understatement to say I couldn't wait for this issue.  Was it worth the wait?  Let's find out...

The Martian Man-Eater!

Holy shit, did I enjoy the last issue of Martian Manhunter!  Not only has Rob Williams begun telling a tale that re-imagines our favorite Martian in new and interesting ways, but the motherfucker is doing it with heart.  I damn near wept at the end of last issue when Martian Manhunter, not wanting to be a weapon for the White Martians, sacrificed his life in front of the Justice League.  Speaking of the Justice League we had Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Flash go up against J'onn in what was one of the coolest fights that I've seen in a long time and just when I thought it couldn't get any cooler, Rob Williams raised the veil and showed us that Martian Manhunter only made the Justice League think they were fighting him as a distraction so he could set up machine to vaporize himself.  I've never been a big fan of J'onn J'onzz, but Rob Williams really made me a believer last month and I can't wait to see where he takes us next.  Let's jump into this issue and find out.

Shit Just Got Real!

Oh man, the Darkseid War is on and after this issue, I don't think that anything will be the same.  I'm getting ahead of myself though.  First let's talk about got us here just in case you decided not to pick up this title and really, besides for not having any cash, there isn't much of an excuse because this is what everyone should be reading.  In the previous issue we had our heroes boom tubed out of harm's way by Metron and after they pried him off his Mobius Chair, Batman took the seat and became that all fabled Bat God that people always complain that writers make him out to be.  This is the genuine article though.  Besides for that, we had Scot Free meet Myrina Black and we found out that Myrina plans on Earth being destroyed in the battle between the Anti-Monitor and Darkseid......which isn't the best plan in my opinion and Superman and Lex Luthor found themselves on Apokolips.  Big things are ahead so let's dive in and check it out.

Nothing but the Truth?

The Truth continues this week and we are off to the Oval Office where Superman was headed after seeing a snow globe.  I know it's not as simple as that, but it sure looked like it at the end of last issue of Superman/Wonder Woman.  After finding his childhood house ripped from the ground, the bodies of relatives taken from their graves and Lana Lang, Steel and other Smallville residents gone missing, Superman went looking for answers.  Instead, he found the Suicide Squad.  Everything must have pointed to the President of the United States in Clark's mind because that's who he ended up confronting in the cliffhanger last month...or did he?  We find out that answer, but do we find out anything else that might push the Truth story forward, at least in this book?  Let's find out...

Fanboy Theories: Murder Mystery on Earth 2

Dead on Arrival

Hello all you Weird Scientists and welcome back to another Fanboy Theory!  Last week, Earth 2 was shaken to it's core, both figuratively and literally.  Terry Sloan, the greatest villain from the original Earth 2, attempted to use a terraforming device to recreate the original Earth. This is when the heroes stepped in. 
Power Girl damaged the machine, as Huntress and Red Arrow put down the monsters it was spawning. This is all wrapped up with Green Lantern finishing off the machine in his green light.  The day was saved, but as the smoked cleared, a body remained.  The body of Terry Sloan.
This leaves a body, but no one standing over it, creating a murder mystery on our hands.  For this Fanboy Theory, I have plucked out who I think are the most likely suspects for this murder. The suspects each have their own reasons of why they hate Sloan or why they want him killed, and that's what we'll be going over today. Enough babbling over the crime, lets get our thinking caps and take a look at the suspects!

Ride the Wave

I've been trying to get a grip on this "Year of the Gods" that we call Injustice: Year Four and I'm struggling.  Sure, we have gods and at times they have been kick ass, but for the most part they have been window dressing while the usual suspects beat each other up.  That all changed a couple of issues ago and even though some may have claimed it was too little, too late, I enjoyed it.  Then last week happened.  After Zeus had been standing on the sidelines, uninterested in the proceedings, he not only decided to get involved, but ended the War and became dictator of the world.  It just felt odd and forced and was my least favorite issue of Injustice EVER.  So, did this week's issue rebound and get on of my favorite books back on track?  Let's find out...

It’s literally raining cats and dogs as the mystic forces of Anubis and Bastet use a tidal wave to settle an ancient score, and only the new, hopelessly inexperienced Doctor Fate can save a city from drowning.

Nothing that we've seen in the past two issues of this makes me even remotely interested in this title and that's a damn shame because I love Doctor Fate.  I'm not interested in the characters, I'm not a fan of the art and they put Fate in a damn hoodie......... I think that's one of the signs of the apocalypse.  I hope things can turn around in this title and make me a believer in it, but I'm not holding my breath.

TRULY OUTRAGEOUS!

In the theme of keeping the 80's forever here. I decided to review Jem and the Holograms #1 by IDW reviving the 80's cartoon series. I had read this issue twice, once before I had watched the cartoon show and once after watching like 15 episodes which are now streaming on Netflix (NETFLIX GIVE ME MONEY) and I have to say I enjoyed both times. Reading it the first time was a good introduction into the main characters who are four sisters who are trying to have a successful band. This first issue was definitely set up, but it introduced the personalities of our characters, introduced the problems they are facing and the beginning of the solution. It was definitely a fine first issue as you don't want to Jam... I mean Jem?... a lot of things into your first issue, but still have enough to keep them coming back.

Doctor Strangefate #1 Review

I've mentioned in these introductions before that I don't put a ton of thought into my Just for the Hell of it selections.  I know that makes me look horrible, but it's not as bad as it sounds.  By that, I mean that when I sit down on Monday night, I look at my collection of  old and new comics and pick what strikes my fancy at that moment and go with it.  This Monday is different.  This Monday I am taking a request.  This Monday I am doing Amalgam Comics Doctor Strangefate #1.

It all started a couple of weeks ago when I thought I was going to set the Internet on fire when I picked the Amalgam Comic, Lobo the Duck, for my Monday review.  It pretty much bombed and I told Eric that I was done with the Amalgam Comics.  In fact, I may have gone on a mini tirade on our podcast (HERE) about it.  Then, Lobo the Duck made a bit of a comeback and one of our Twitter friends, Martin Beddoes ( @martin_beddoes), told me I should review Doctor Strangefate.  So I thought, "What the Hell" and here it is, my review for Amalgam Comics Doctor Strangefate #1.

This is such a strange title for me because I love the creative team and actually look forward to anything they do...... but I haven't really liked this title yet.  I'm a whirlwind of emotions when it comes to this especially since the Green Lanterns are my favorite heroes and I can only hope that I enjoy this issue and get on the Lost Army trolley.

Good Golly Miss Molly, it's time for another horror comic for this Just For The Hell of It Monday and at this point I don't know if this title excites me the way it once did.  It's like I've been dating it for a couple of years now, but every time I'm forced to do it, I'm thinking about other comics.  Oh well, that's life I guess.  Either I'll just move on and find another horror comic to look at or I'll just give in and marry the damn thing............. You know what?  I'm not sure what we're talking about anymore so let's just get into this Monday with The Fly: Outbreak #3.

I feel like I have been one of Genevieve Valentine's biggest supporters since her Catwoman run started, but that's not anything to be proud of.  Why would I say that?  Because this book has been so good, that's why.  I'm not going out on any ledge, putting my award winning career (I have a lot of "Q's", remember) on the line by saying that Valentine yanked a beloved character out of the Gotham Underground where she had been languishing in for far too long and made her legit once again.   Under Valentine's guidance, Selina Kyle has become a strong and smart crime boss who is one step ahead of everyone, except maybe herself.  The only thing that this book has lacked recently is some straight up action and throwing Spoiler in the mix and having Eiko train her seemed to promise just that. So, how was this issue?  Let's find out...

For this issue we'll be heading back to Themyscira to check back in on Wonder Woman and her prisoner Steve Trevor.  I'm excited about this issue because where I found the introduction of these characters a bit too "what we've seen a hundred times", I have high hopes that from where we go from there will be a exciting new interpretation.  Now that we've got our recruits ready, it's time to get into some combat so let's check it out.

Where No Ring Slinger Has Gone Before

Oh man, let's get back into the Star Trek Universe because after that first issue, I can't wait.  the creators took the greatest of care to bring us the rebooted Star Trek characters and while some of us might have a problem with that series' second movie........ it's still Star Trek and at this point, we should all take what we can get.  In the previous issue, we saw the Guardian Ganthet escape the DCU at what I want to call some point in the future because all the Green Lanterns are apparently dead and the mysterious force that was behind it was now trying to finish the job by killing off the last Guardian.  I don't know how he did it......... I guess we'll talk chalk it up to Guardian powers, but Ganthet escaped his foe by coming to the Star Trek Universe and our crew of the USS Enterprise discovered the dead world of Mogo, Ganthet's long dead body and six rings of the emotional spectrum.  If being hailed by a pissed off Klingon that wants to see Captain Kirk brought to justice for insulting the Klingon Empire wasn't bad enough, Scotty had to go fucking with the rings and got them to turn back on.  So as our issue ended, the rings shot out to seek new bearers, but it's not all bad because it looks like Hal Jordan has arrived to give the Enterprise and it's crew all he's got.  Let's jump into this second issue and continue our five year mission, that's gotten stranger than anything we ever saw in Star Trek TOS........ well maybe not as strange as Space Lincoln....... Let's check it out.
