DC Television Round up: Week of 4/4/15

A WEEK OF EXPLOSIVE DEVELOPMENT!

This week of DC shows, we had a variety of development. On iZombie, we see the effect of going too long without brains, as Liv helps Detective Clive track down the true culprit of a pair of murders. On The Flash, we get not one, but TWO versions of the Trickster as we learn the true history behind "Harrison Wells." On Arrow, the pieces have been set by Ra's al Ghul to frame Oliver for not only the murders, but to end his career as the emerald archer. How will our heroes fare? LETS DIVE IN AND FIND OUT!

Wonder Woman #40 Review

Written by: Meredith Finch
Art by: David Finch
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

Know Your Role

I will not hide the fact that I haven't been a fan of Wonder Woman since the Finch's took over.  At first, I complained that Meredith seemed to be stuck between honoring Brian Azzarello's run and making the story her own.  Since then, she's added her own elements and it's gotten better, but it's still far from great.  Including Donna Troy seemed like an editorial decision (and gimmick), but I have loved the interaction with the rest of the DCU, especially the Justice League.  With the Convergence Event hitting shelves, I was hoping this issue would end this first arc and get me excited for where the book was heading when it returns in June.  It did half of that.

Harley Quinn #16 Review

Written by: Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti
Art by: Chad Hardin and John Timms
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

The Gangs All Here

Harley Quinn is one of those books where you just sit back and enjoy the ride.  Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti have made it a habit of being unpredictably hilarious so you never know what Harley will do next and I wouldn't want it any other way.  Chad Hardin and John Timms get into the act as well, throwing Easter Eggs on almost every page, turning every read into a warped version of Where's Waldo.  Again, I wouldn't want it any other way.  Better yet, when you couple all that zaniness with a good story, you can't beat this book.  So, when last issue ended with Harley putting out an ad to form her "Gang of Harleys", I couldn't wait.  However, it seems that the whole move to California and Covergence Event put a bit of a wrench in Harley's plan.  How?  Let's find out...

Weird Science DC Comics Podcast Episode 12: Unfriended, Eating Challenges and Convergence

Episode 12: For some reason, Eric insists on talking about Unfriended and Jim doesn't feel so good (Physically and about talking about Unfriended).  Then Eric responds to a listener mail by eating a massive amount of food and getting sick and they both respond to Dan Didio's Convergence video.  Of course, they talk about a bunch of comics and Eric muses about the difference between male and female penises.  All this and more, this week on the Weird Science DC Comics Podcast (It's not called Weird Out Loud!)

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Two-Face is fighting another world’s Harvey Dent, and it’s up to Renee Montoya as The Question to help him beat the odds.

Here it is folks, a much longer, more detailed preview of The Question so hopefully Greg Rucka doesn't get mad at us for calling it a "Preview".  With this other Harvey Dent invading this Pre-FlashPoint World and going up against not only Two-Face but the Question as well............  I still say that his odds are 50/50........ Get it?  That's a coin flip joke son, ya gotta follow me here.

Convergence: Batgirl #1 Preview

Written by ALISA KWITNEY
Art by RICK LEONARDI and MARK PENNINGTON
Cover Price: $3.99

Release Date: April 8, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! After a year living under the confinement of the dome, Stephanie Brown isn’t sure she wants to be Batgirl again. But when she’s attacked by Catman and Gorilla Grodd from the world of Flashpoint, she’s forced to put on the cape and cowl to fight alongside Red Robin and Cassandra Cain!

I'll admit that I don't have a long history with Stephanie Brown, Casandra Cain or Catman.  I do loves me some Gorilla Grod, though, so I can't wait for this issue.  This preview is one of those that has me intrigued in a "how the heck are they going to explain it all" kind of way.

Convergence: Batman and Robin #1 Preview

Written By: Ron Marz
Art By: Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 8, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Being trapped in a domed city makes for a tense, inescapable family reunion as Batman struggles to keep the friction between Damian Wayne and Jason Todd from exploding!

Now that Batman and Robin is cancelled, I can't wait to get this issue because it will be all I have left......... That and I want to see Damian up against Jason..... Yeah, that should be pretty sweet.

Convergence: Justice League #1 Preview

Written by FRANK TIERI
Art by VICENTE CIFUENTES
Cover Price: $3.99

Release Date: April 8, 2015

Preview via Comic Book

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! The Justice League story you never expected to see begins when Supergirl, Zatanna, Vixen and Jade attend Jesse Quick’s baby shower, which quickly turns into a life-and-death struggle with Flashpoint Aquaman!

This female Justice League has me intrigued, but so does the fact that Frank Tieri and Vicente Cifuentes are doing it.  The preview below is interesting in that we see the very beginnings of the "Dome", but the best part is Zatanna.  She really can make an entrance!

STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Just as they've finally been reunited, the romance between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon is sentenced to execution by Flashpoint Hawkman and Hawkwoman!

Top Five Fridays: Characters I Want In Justice League 3001

If Weird Science was a baseball team, I'd like to think that our coach would either be Earl Weaver or Lou Piniella.  Why?  Because those two son of a guns were miserable and loved arguing...just like us.  What does that have to do with Top Five Fridays?  Nothing whatsoever...except that if one of those guys were our coach, they would have tapped their right arm and called in the relief pitcher, Jim Werner.  That's right, Eric hasn't done a list in a couple of weeks and when Sweet Lou heard he wouldn't be doing it again, he called me out of the bullpen.  So, here I go with my first attempt.  Wish me luck.

Wonder Woman '77 #4 Review

Written by: Marc Andreyko
Art by: Jason Badower
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: April 2, 2015

That's Incredible!

I can't say enough about what Marc Andreyko has done with Wonder Woman '77.  He obviously loves the source material and writes it like the original show writers did...with respect.  Sure, there is a bit of campy fun, but it is never over the top like some other digital comic based on a show with a number after it.  The first arc was a fun and action packed story that anyone could jump into and enjoy.  However, if you were a fan of the show and/or had the luck (or maybe not) of growing up in the 70's, it was pure bliss.  Then it just disappeared.  I hate to editorialize in a review, but what is DC's game plan?  The Digital First line seems to be engaged in one big game of hide and seek.  I am a fan that happens to review the books and I never have any idea when they are coming out. It's so frustrating. So, it was with pleasure and exasperated joy when this issue hit my download queue.  Was it worth the mysterious wait?  Hell yea!  Let me tell you why...

Get To Know Your Fear Lanterns

Superman/Wonder Woman #17 Review

Written by: Peter J. Tomasi
Art by: Doug Mahnke
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 3, 2015

Captain Obvious

Peter J. Tomasi's young run on Superman/Wonder Woman has not been great.  The only way I can explain it is that it doesn't seem to have a soul...or Soule.  Sure, Tomasi is punching the right buttons, but the chemistry between the two leads has been off.  Wonder Woman may have gained the strength of being the God of War, but personally, I wouldn't want to be around her.  She's just nasty and mean. Superman has been a little better, but has become a mere tool the last couple of issues.  Then there is the matter of the villains, Magog and Circe.  Magog is and always will be a joke and while Circe is a decent villain, her petty quest for vengeance feels small for a book this big.  Going into this issue, I was hoping for a glimmer of hope that this book would get back to it's better days when it was one of my favorites.  Unfortunately, that is not the case.  Let's find out why...

We've got another Endgame tie-in here and I was thinking if you were a big fan of this series, then this might be pretty cool for you.  When we left this series it seemed like it was right in the middle of Batman Eternal and since we know that this is during Endgame, you'll get to see what the Manor has been up to since all that time has passed............ I don't know, I'm trying to find a way to make this interesting......... Is it working?  Let's jump into this story and find out what the Manor has to do with Joker playing his final game.

Shoot The Moon

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

It's finally happened.  Time went and crept up on us and out of nowhere Batman and Robin has ended......... Which is crazy to me because it's one of the best selling books that DC Comics has..... but for whatever reason, we're saying goodbye to our Dynamic Duo and welcoming Damian to his own solo title in June.  At least we had an excellent last issue last week and we still have this last Annual to look forward to.  Let's hope that it's fun, exciting and most important of all, it shows us the Dark Knight and The Boy Wonder the way that we want to see them........ Pretty much as father and son and the greatest crime fighting duo that the world has ever seen.  Let's push the depression away and dive into this issue.

Batman/Superman Annual #2 Review

Written by: Greg Pak
Art by: Tom Derenick, Tyler Kirkham, Ian Churchill, Ardian Syaf and Emanuela Lupacchino
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

The Honeymoon is Over

When Annuals come around, I always hope that they tell nice little stories that occur somewhere just outside of continuity and only exist to make me smile.  I won't lie, it's because I'm a bit lazy and those issues are so easy to review.  Slap a few sentences together and away you go...review done.  So, when I heard that this Annual was going to end the Superman's Joker story, I knew I'd have to get out my overalls, punch in and get to working.  Thanks a lot, Greg Pak.  I know what your thinking, "If Jim has to get off his ass and do a real review, I hope it was worth it."  Let's see if it was, shall we?

Closing Time

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

We're finally here, the war to end all wars and with it the fate of Earth 2.  We've been traveling back and forth between this world and our day to day lives for awhile now, watching with bated breath as our heroes failed time and again but hopefully with this final issue we'll be able to see our heroes....... or Wonders if you prefer, we'll be able to see if they can overcome this gigantic threat and take their world back............ But since we've already seen that this world is a great big bag of doomed, I guess we'll see who all get out with their lives and how our Wonders will move on from this and become a Society in June.  In the last issue we saw our heroes put out their best effort in taking Darkseid down as the survivors of Earth 2 tried to escape their planet but as the issue closed it looked like all was lost, with the exception of Green Lantern; who has tapped into the Green throughout the Multiverse.  Let's see if Alan Scott can be the savior that Earth 2 needs before Darkseid goes and curb stomps everyone in his path.  Let's check out this final issue.

Eternal Indeed

I usually poke fun at generic review phrases, but Batman: Eternal has been a roller coaster ride.  I can hear the collective sigh all the way up here in the Weird Science HQ, but let me explain.  Like a roller coaster, this book has had it's ups and downs and it's twists and turns.  I have gone from loving it to liking it to hating it to loving it and hating it again and again.  Part of the reason has been the revolving door of creative teams, but it also goes deeper than that.  The overall story has been hit or miss and at times it felt like it lost direction.  Luckily, the last bunch of issues have been some of the best and the book has regained it's momentum heading into this finale.  Does this issue wrap everything up and make the entire run worth the year long effort?  Let's find out...

You Want An Ending?

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

This is it all you future fans, it's time to wrap up this year long event and see what all the hubbub was about showing us the events of Five Years From Now.  It's been a strange year filled with ups and downs, badassery and boredom.  Hopefully this issue will be able to find a happy medium as we close the book on Futures End.  In the last issue, Tim Drake took the mantle of Batman Beyond and went back in time to........ Well, our present and stopped Brother Eye from sending out a signal to our Earth 2 refugees, stopping the people from Earth 2 ever coming to New Earth.  If that wasn't enough to keep the future from happening, Brother Eye obeying his programming to make sure the Earth is safe, began his self destruct sequence and somehow sent Tim Drake back to his own time....... But was it Tim's time or the Batman Beyond suit's time?  Let's find out as we dive into this final issue.

Superman/Wonder Woman #17 Preview

Written by: Peter J. Tomasi.
Art by: Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza

Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

It's a bloody showdown as Circe and Magog attack the power couple! And the outcome will bring about a major change in Kal and Diana's relationship.

Oh Magog, I almost forgot about you.  The poor guy is just horrible.  Seriously, does anybody like him? Anybody?  I am interested in how Tomasi continues to change the tone of the book and want to see what Superman does after last issue.  I also love Doug Mahnke's art so I am interested in seeing how this book ends before Convergence.

Batwoman #40 Review

Written by: Marc Andreyko
Art by: Georges Jeanty
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: March 18, 2015

Almost Over

I have been a supporter of Marc Andreyko's run on Batwoman and I will continue to be.  Sure, Kate Kane's story may have changed since he took over, but isn't that what a writer is supposed to do...make the story his own?  If he followed the former creative team with a connect-the-dots story, I don't think anyone would have been pleased, especially Andreyko himself.  So, it's with a sad heart that I review the penultimate issue of his run even though we all know that it's headed to the best place ever...Space!  Was it any good?  Let's find out...

Sinestro Annual #1 Preview

Release Date: April 1, 2015

A traitor lurks among the Sinestro Corps, and only by delving into the never-before-revealed origins of the team can Sinestro learn the truth – before his head ends up on a platter!

This is funny to me because if Sinestro hadn't already appeared in an issue of Secret Origins, I'd swear that this was the solicit for it, instead of the Annual.  I'm always for new and exciting information about things that I love and man do I love me some Sinestro.

Release Date: March 25, 2015

Wrap It Up!

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

In the last issue of Arkham Manor we saw Batman finally confront and takeout Arkham's killer within the walls: The Spider........ I don't know how he got the name "The Spider" but solicits began saying it and Batman decided to call the villain by that name, so I guess we'll go with it.  Anyway, Batman overcame the killer and then went out into Gotham to search for Seth Wickham, who never made it to the hospital after "The Spider" drilled into his head and as the issue closed we saw that Seth's psychosis has gotten the better of him as Batman discovered that the young man had murdered his parents.  Let's check out this finale to this very strange and short series and see if all is put right in the world and Bruce Wayne can get his family home back.  Let's check it out.

It all ends this week.  I'm sad to see Kate go, but it all ends in the most fun place a comic (or anything for that matter) can end...Space!  I can't wait to see what the original rapper (Etrigan, not Nipsey Russell) has to ryhme about that.

DC Comics Best Covers of the Week 3/28/2015

This week was chock full of awesome covers and while it was hard to narrow it down to just four, that's what I get paid the big bucks for.  So, let me stop the ladies from feeding me grapes and get my tunic on because it's Covers of the Week time!

Welcome back to Eternia all you Masters fans, it's time to get back into the Eternity War and see if our heroes can collect the two gems known as the Eyes of Grayskull and use them to defeat the forces of Hordak......... or at least collect them so Hordak doesn't get his hands on them because that would just be bad news bears.  As we saw last issue, after She-Ra fought off Scorpia and Catra she found the temple in the Sands of Time that supposedly holds the Gem of Chrono.  I just hope she can get to it because as the issue closed we saw Hordak all Power of Grayskulled up and man did he look intimidating.  Let's see if our Princess of Power can overcome the dark lord or if all of Eternia will plummet into darkness.  Let's check it out.

Batman and Robin Annual #3 Preview

Written By: Peter J. Tomasi
Art By: Juan Jose Ryp
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

After a year that included death, resurrection and battles with the forces of Apokolips, it’s time for Batman and Robin to get back to basics both as father and son and partners in crimefighting. But have the events of the past year left too great a rift for them to bounce back from?

Except for the part of the solicit that comes off kind of ominous about the relationship of Batman and Robin, the rest sounds like exactly where I want us to be in this book and where I'd like this series to end on.  Last week's Batman and Robin #40 was the best book that I've read this year and if we can continue with that kind of storytelling here, I'll be happy as hell.

Gotham Academy: Endgame #1 Preview

Written by: BECKY CLOONAN and BRENDEN FLETCHER
Art by: JEFF STOKELY, with stories and art by JOY ANG, CLIO CHIANG & VERA BROSGOL

Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 1, 2015

Gotham City has been overrun by craziness, and the power is out at Gotham Academy! But don’t worry. The kids are safely locked up, huddled around candles and flashlights and telling the Gotham City version of ghost stories: Joker stories! Meanwhile, a mysterious figure connected to the Academy’s past is patrolling the grounds with a crossbow, but who is it?

I'll admit it, I was worried about this issue.  How were Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher going to do a tie-in to such a mature story.  The answer is they aren't...kind of.  It's the kids at Gotham Academy telling ghost stories and I can't wait.  It seems like a whole bunch of fun.  Will it add to the Endgame story?  Probably not, but who cares...I'm in.

Convergence #0 Preview

Art by: ETHAN VAN SCIVER

Where do worlds go when they die?
The Earthquakes felt round the Multiverse, Superman’s lost days after “Doomed,” the World’s End – all these points will converge as the history of the DCU is spun from a new perspective, the perspective of a mad god and his arrogant child. The biggest story in DC history ties into literally every DC story ever told – and it all begins here.
Kingdom Come, Red Son, Wild West Justice League, Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew – all the worlds you remember can still be found on Telos. Everything matters. Every story matters.
Don’t miss the start of DC’s April/May 2015 event with this special issue!

That solicit sure is long, isn't it?  You know what it also is?  Awesome.  I was unsure of this event for a while now, but Dan Didio's video last week and this preview have me so excited for the event itself, but especially this issue.  It all starts on Wednesday and I'm going to be in the front row.

Convergence: Wonder Woman #1 Preview

Written by: LARRY HAMA
Art by: JOSHUA MIDDLETON

Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 22, 2015

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! Diana Prince is in the grip of a Domesday cult when Steve Trevor leaps into the fray! But can he save Etta Candy from vampires of Red Rain?

I was a huge fan of Brian Azzarello's run on Wonder Woman and since then I've been...let's just say a bit disappointed.  I can't wait to see what Larry Hama does with this book.  Larry Hama? The star of the M*A*S*H episode, "The Korean Surgeon"?  Yes, that one.  Of course, he's mainly known for his work on G.I. Joe, Spiderman, Wolverine and other books. He's joined by Joshua Middleton who has done a bunch of covers for DC and looking at the above image, you can see why.
