I promise everyone that I won't use this introduction paragraph to go on and on about how great the story and art are in this Digital First series. I won't tell you that it's a fairy tale full of myth and magic that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their age, sex or previous comic knowledge. I won't even mention that this would be the perfect way to get a younger boy or girl interested in Wonder Woman and comics in general. Nope, I'll just tell you to sit back, pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa while i tell you all about The Legends of Wonder Woman #6.
The last chapter ended with a ball of fire streaking through the sky over Wonder Woman and everyone had to think one thing...Steve Trevor. However, Renae De Liz isn't taking the easy way out here and the story doesn't just rocket forward because a man lands on Themyscira. No, it's all just another piece of the puzzle that started at the beginning of this story and continues this week.
The issue starts with Diana running to where the fireball crashed into the island and indeed finds a man. He has survived, but barely gets himself out of the fiery crater before passing out. While Diana wonders if he is the cause of all the troubles happening on Themyscira, Alcippe gives a very cryptic response...he is an innocent brought for an evil purpose. When she says it, it doesn't make much sense, but soon it becomes a bit more clear.
Before they can catch their breath, Alcippe makes Diana take the man away as someone approaches. It becomes very obvious who the villains are in this story arc and how far they will go to get what they want. After a brief fight, Alcippe is struck down and only Diana running away saves the man. The villains adapt quickly, form a new story and head to the Council to use this all as proof that Hippolyta has lost the favor of the gods.
As far as this series goes, this is by far the darkest chapter yet. Betrayal and lack of honor are front and center and with the introduction of a man to Themyscira, this book just grew up a bit. I know it had to happen, but I almost wish the peaceful times with cute little Diana could have lasted forever. I know that will change soon enough, but it takes time.
Back to the story, with the help of Pegasus, Diana gets the man to safety and heads off to join the Council. When she gets there, the damage is already done and it's been decided that the Amazons, led by Antiope, will hunt down the outsider and kill him on site. The man's arrival is being used as further proof that Hippolyta should step down as Queen. There is a bit of good news, however, as Diana learns that Alcippe is not dead and vows to her mother to make everything right.
This is another heavy setup issue that only pushes the story ahead a bit. It's still a good issue, but De Liz is taking her time with certain things. However, she does show us the villains apparently behind all the troubles and that they are definitely getting help from above (and below). It's starting to go from fairy tale to Greek tragedy right before the reader's eyes. My only real disappointment is that we don't get a whole lot of Diana this chapter, but I'm sure that will change soon.
The art in this book is so good, but even that has to take a back seat a bit in this issue. It's a very quick issue with only a couple of set pieces and only some brief action. Because of that, the art doesn't stand out as much as it has in this series.
Bits and Pieces:
I hate to say that this is a down issue because it's still good and filled with some pretty heavy reveals, but it's still setup heavy with not enough Diana. It does set up some pretty major moments coming real soon and I can't wait. I still recommend this series with all my heart, but this issue wasn't the best.
8.0/10
