To Attack Or Not To Attack, That Is The Question
*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*
When we first stepped back in time to see the New Teen Titans, we saw that everything wasn't all pinatas and RC Cola for the team after their year under the dome. Yeah, Dick Grayson had finally popped the question to Starfire and got married, but it looked like the honeymoon was over once the dome disappeared and Dick couldn't trust Kori not to kill. That wasn't all that was bad either. Donna was pining over her creepy old professor, Crystal was obsessed with Jericho and Beast Boy was without a friend, since Cyborg was out of commission during the year due to most of him being cybernetic....... and none of that changed once the dome fell, except for the Cyborg part and our team was forced to fight against the Tangent Doom Patrol. Let's see if Nightwing and Firehawk's probationary allegiance can lead to a peaceful solution or if these two teams will tear each other apart. Let's check it out.
Explain It!:
Our story begins with Nightwing and Firehawk talking about finding a way to overcome the booming voice that demanded that both of their teams fight one another, but I'm not really sure what they planned on doing because all we see them do is prance around the city. That is until Nightwing gets word that The Doom Patrol are attacking his team and he thinks that this whole partnership thing was a big diversion to draw him away........ Poor Firehawk, even if all she did was fly around on her hover bike and talk about how it would be nice not to fight, instead of actually finding a way to do that, her heart was in the right place. In case you didn't know, the reason that the Doom Patrol are attacking the Titans......... except for you know, the whole Convergence thing, is because they need Cyborg's power cells for a device that they think will allow them to get back to their own Earth........... and man are they seriously kicking the shit out of the Titans to get them. The funniest part of this fight to me is when Tangent Doomsday shoots Beast Boy and the blast goes through him and hits Jericho and all Crystal is worried about is Jericho, who is fine and Beast Boy just lies motionless next to him........ I think Gar needs to find new friends. Eventually the Tangent Doom Patrol secure Cyborg and leave the Titans licking their wounds.
After the fight, Nightwing tries to come up with a way to find Cyborg as everyone seems to loose faith in him. Starfire is pissed because since he won't let her kill people, she hesitated and Vic was taken and Beast Boy is bummed because Dick dismissed his offer to help in finding his best bud. I'm sure Crystal and Jericho are loosing faith in Dick too, but all we see of them is Crystal proclaiming her love for Jericho and me spending a bunch of time trying to find out what he's saying in American Sign Language. Eventually the love thing seems to get sorted out and Beast Boy pinpoints Cyborg's whereabouts after the Tangent Doom Patrol start siphoning out his power cells. After the team stop the bickering and bullshit, they rally together and find their friend and another big fight ensues.
In the end, Cyborg offers the Tangent Doom Patrol an ultimatum. Either they stop the fighting and everyone works together or he blows up all their tech to get them home. So the two teams decide to work together and before anything can happen from the decision, the big earthquake happens that we've seen in every other #2 of the Convergence tie-ins, but instead of just a simple rumble, here we get the Tangent Doom Patrol teleported away and The Teen Titans finding themselves and their city on a different planet with one lone star in the sky..............The End.............What?
That's it for this issue of Convergence: The New Teen Titans and for as much as I was looking forward to this tie-in, I wasn't as impressed with the first issue as I had hoped to be and here it's even less. Yeah, we get the standard fight that we've come to expect from these tie-ins, which I still enjoy even if they've become tedious at times, but all of the characters came off flat to me and didn't really seem to have anything to really do in this issue. Now I do have to say that this is the first tie-in that I've read this week and maybe the ending is something that's being explored in all the Pre-Crisis Of Infinite Earths tie-ins this week and it will make more sense with every title that I read, but it just shows up out of nowhere and left me scratching my head. I did love the art in this issue though and maybe the fact that the emotion felt lacking here is due to the fact that we only had two issues to deal with it, but this just left me wanting more.
Bits and Pieces:
While I was really looking forward to this second issue, I have to say that nothing really happens here and for all the emotion that is supposed to be going on in this story, every character came off feeling flat, even when they were supposed to be going through a big emotional revelation. I did love the art and seeing these characters presented this old way was really fun but by the end it just leaves you wanting more.
6/10
This issue was different from other Convergence titles this week (that I read) in that I felt like it really came together towards the end, while other titles started strong and then sort of petered out somewhat. The wordy talking bits at the beginning were pure Marv Wolfman, and I can't help but think it was geared at least a little bit towards fan service. It was cool to see in this book, among others this week, the two battling teams come together against a common threat, even if Cyborg had to threaten them to make it happen!
ReplyDeleteWow, they really didn't give Jericho anything to do. ^^: I mean, his power is body snatching, you'd think it would resolve things real quick.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the story with Kole and Jericho? I didn't understand it one bit.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, up until you said that I honestly remembered her name being Crystal, but the gist is that Kole loved Jericho and he ignored her advances until finally giving in.........The End
DeleteSo, that wasn't sign language for "Thanks, but I'm gay"?
DeleteIt came off to me that he was saying he wasn't into her. Then I guess he changed his mind after she crystalized his painting. IDK, I'm not fluent in ASL, but that's what it seemed like to me.
