New God Backup
*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*
In the last issue of Sinestro, we had our John Water's mustached anti-hero get captured by Mongul and The Apex League, but not before he sent out a distress signal to the Sinestro Corps and to the New God Bekka......... and man is it awesome seeing her sport a Sinestro Corps ring even if it was only a cliffhanger. Hopefully the fear Lanterns can overcome the forces of Warworld and The Apex League before Mongul's new emotional spectrum drainer leaves them powerless. Let's check it out and see.
Explain It!:
Our issue begins with a great big battle above Warworld, where our Sinestro Corps and Bekka begin tearing apart Mongul's forces. It's actually pretty funny because while Bekka is working her new fear toy, her greatest weapon is still making all those around her fall helplessly in love with her. Pilots of Mongul's forces are refusing to shoot her down and are slamming their ships into others to protect their Fear Lantern Lady Love. While the battle rages on outside, within Mongul's stronghold Sinestro wages his own battle of wills as he tries to make his Apex League guard realize what Mongul is capable of and that he has no intentions of keeping his pact with the League in helping them end The Paling's scourge that has spread across the Universe when he gets control of the Sinestro Corps.
Out in the battle, Mongul joins the fight and is just tearing apart the Sinestro Corps as his refurbished Light Drainers are doing their work and to my surprise, he even goes toe to toe with a New God and isn't smote something fierce, like I imagined he would. I knew that Mongul was a bad ass, but holding his ground against a New God is something that just puts him on a whole other level in my book. Back to the Sinestro part, Soranik and a couple of Fear Lanterns break into Warworld and free Sinestro and after he gets his captor to show them the control room, our master of Fear reverses the Light Drainer filling up everyone's ring and now it's on.
In the end, the Sinestro Corps overcomes Mongul and wrap him in steel surrounded by the rings of all the fallen Corpsmen and Sinestro sends him out into the Universe. Sinestro tells the Apex League that if they want to find The Paling then all they need to do is follow Mongul because he's going to be admitting a bunch of emotion, drawing the emotionless cult towards him. As the issue closes, it seems like Bekka plans on sticking around for awhile and Sinestro claims Warworld as his own.
That's it for this issue of Sinestro and even though I thought this was going to be a big over the top action romp with Bekka coming in and kicking ass and taking names, it was still enjoyable even without my crazy expectations being met. The story just keeps building from Sinestro claiming a planet for New Korugar, saving the survivors of his lost planet and now taking on Mongul and The Apex League while The Paling is still out and about just waiting for us to drop our guard so they can jump back in the story, scaring the hell out of us unassuming readers............ That's a bit over the top, but it's true. Bad news is always around the corner when reading this and it's awesome to be able to get lost in the world of Sinestro and his Corps............. I just wish there was more to do with the Futures End tie-in besides for the Apex League just being there. While I had an issue with the art in this book last issue, it seems to have gotten better here and it looked great. Can't wait to get back to this once Convergence has ended, at least we have the Annual next week to keep us happy until then.
Bits and Pieces:
Even though I would have liked a little more of this issue to foreshadow what we saw in the Futures End tie-in to Sinestro, this was a really fun issue to read and proves that Sinestro is no one to trifle with........... and that's always a good time. Don't mess with the master of fear and after seeing his newest recruit here, it's going to be a wild time in the future of Sinestro.
7.8/10
