Time To Get The Band Back Together
In the last issue of Justice League Dark.......... Which was awhile ago for me because man am I doing this review late, our Dark heroes Madam Xanadu, Deadman and Black Orchid found themselves in a place where time has no bearing and people aren't born, they don't die, they just are. Even though this place seemed like a paradise, our heroes tried to find a way out by going to a forbidden black time ribbon in the sky and while they battled it out with the guards, the ribbon opened and it looked like the blackness had come alive and tsunamied out of control......... Possibly because Madam Xanadu allowed some of time to leave her body and killed one of the immortals there........ I don't know, this whole story has been weird as hell. Let's see if it gets any weirder as we jump into this issue and see what happened with Zatanna merging with the world tree before time existed......... Yeah, pretty weird.
Explain It!:
Justice League Dark begins with Swamp Thing, Nightmare Nurse, Andrew Bennett and Frankenstein still sailing through the end of time when their prayers are answered. Before the spell Nightmare Nurse cast to create their magic sailboat fails, Swamp Thing feels The Green and this group is pulled out of the nothingness that the Langoliers leave behind, by vines......... Simultaneously, our heroes stuck outside of time are pulled away just before that black tidal wave with eyes submerges all of this paradise land........... Yeah, our heroes really fucked that world over. So after the tug through time everyone winds up with Zatanna in the Land Before Time.... Little Foot will come later.
So after Zatanna tries to explain to everyone what the place is and how long she's been there by freaking the hell out and alienating the whole group, the World Tree comes to life and explains that all of creation is in jeopardy and it needs the Justice League Dark to make sure that....... Well, time happens. To help them on their quest, The World Tree sheds some seed pods that either originally create or recreate The House of Mystery...... Since it's the Land Before Time, it's kind of sketchy about if this is where The House of Mystery actually came from but it's fun the way that the book speculates about it.
In the end, the team gets in the House of Mystery and it takes off to The Heart of Chronos, the dimension from where all time comes from in all the Universes, but things aren't all hunky dory in Chrono's Heart. No, it seems it has some blockages in the form of.......... well, black oozy time gremlins......... I don't know, I guess that's a thing and it's because of that thing that time is all messed up and it's up to our team to stop them, but it doesn't look good. After Zatanna went all Super Mage and used up all the power she acquired in the Land Before Time, the menace seems to be unaffected and our issue closes with the House of Mystery right in the middle of time whirlwinding about as black ooze shoots back and forth....... I guess that's a bad thing........ I don't know.
That's it for this issue of Justice League Dark and man is this story line out there. You know, I've been reading these issues and even rereading them because of the lateness of this review and I have no idea what's really going on or why we had all these stories that just led here and didn't really matter in the first place. Maybe I'm off base but this hasn't really been a story arc that I can get into and I wish that Justice League Dark would end on a different note. The art was good though, so if you love nice looking art and the JLD characters, then maybe you'll like this, it's just not for me.
Bits and Pieces:
Justice League Dark continues it's strange tale of our heroes outside of time but at least with this issue it seems to finally go somewhere, which after reading this story line for what feels like forever, it's about time. I really love these characters but I sadly haven't been able to get into this story and I find myself bored while reading it. Hopefully the next two issues are strong ones because I'd like this series to end on a high note.
6/10
