DC Comics Best Covers of the Week 12/13/14

How are all our Weirdos doing?  If you didn't know, that was my lame first attempt at nicknaming our "many" fans.  Hey, what's good for Pia Toscano is good for us, right?  I went with Weirdos because Swifties, Katy-Cats, Killjoys, Maggots, Barbies and RihannaNavy were already taken.  I still might go with my second pick, "People Who Love Jim But Only Tolerate the Other Guys on the Site Because They aren't as Good as Jim, but Try Real Hard and Jim Feels Bad For Them Because They aren't as Awesome as Him-ites".  Rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Speaking of nicknames, when we ever get a podcast going (which should have started ages ago), I'm sure we'll all get stories of Eric's days as a Juggalo.  Yea, he still thinks that's cool, btw.  Then again, the guy rocks a headband that the Frog Brothers would laugh at and has been seen wearing an eye patch from time-to-time. I could go on and on about Eric being a living fashion faux pas, but we are here for covers. Comic book covers to be exact.  This week we get a a very familiar face...twice and some really cool variants.  Enjoy.

Cover of the Week

New Suicide Squad #5 (Juan Ferreyra)

I am really thinking of renaming this column "Let's see what Juan Ferreyra is up too this week".  He has been kicking ass in the cover department, but this one may be my all-time favorite.  I am kicking around the idea of a year end Covers of the Year column and if I do it, this one may be the winner.  I love it.  What better way to show the new Squad than with such a great, eye catching cover?  The best part is no Joker's Daughter.  I'm sorry, I never miss an opportunity to express my hatred for her.

Runners Up

Constantine #20 (Juan Ferreyra)

Growing up in the Philadelphia area, there was a commercial for the local news that pointed out that a certain news van was everywhere you looked.  I'd like to "borrow" it's slogan to say, "There goes that Juan Ferreyra again!" His Constantine covers have been consistently good and this one has the punk rock, union jack, guitar slinging Constantine to tip the scales in it's direction.  Eric's review of the issue is HERE.

Batgirl #37 (Darwyn Cooke Variant)

I know that Eric has struggled with the new direction of Batgirl, but I hope he agrees that this cover is awesome.  It reminds me of watching the beginning of the Batman '66 television show and hoping that Batgirl would go speeding across the screen at the end of the intro.  Yea, I had a thing for Batgirl.  Eric's review for the issue is HERE.

Justice League United #7 (Darwyn Cooke Variant)

Yep, another Darwyn Cooke variant.  I'm no genius to say that this one is "New Frontier" and just plain awesome.  I love that everyone is flying except Green Arrow.  It's like he just figured that since he can't fly, he'd just go with what he does best...shoot an arrow. I'm guessing that's just his go to move.  Can't speak Spanish?  Fire an arrow.  Can't swim? Fire an arrow.  Can't figure out the best recipe for meatloaf?  Go to allrecipes.com and then shoot an arrow.  Works for me.

Justice League United #7 (Rod Reis Variant)

I'm a fan of this cover for the humor and personality of it.  I like the art as well, but seeing Animal Man and Green Arrow hanging out is just great.  They are like the not-so-good-but-still-fun JLU version of Green Lantern and Green Arrow and the book (obviously written by Oliver specifically for Buddy) is a great touch.  I just want to know, what the hell is Ollie drinking?

Cover Song of the Week

Revolution (Grandaddy)

There are a zillion Beatles covers by artists ranging from Alvin and the Chipmunks to The Zutons.  Being a huge Beatles fan, I usually stick my nose up at any other version of what I think is already perfection, but I loved the Grandaddy's version of Revolution the minute I first heard it.  It's from the "I am Sam" soundtrack, but don't hold that against it!  I hope you like it as much as I do.

See you next week, Weirdos!
