Top 5 Fridays: Top 5 Actors We Want To Play DC Characters
For this week's Top 5 Friday, I figured we talk about the big buzz on the interwebs; that's right the upcoming DC Films that were announced this week. In case you've been under a rock all week, we've found out that a slew of DC movies have been announced and I have been transported to some sort of Nirvana here as I patiently wait for all my favorite superheroes to hit the big screen. Seriously I think I might have died and since I wasn't a complete asshole my entire life I was granted the reward of having these films get made, because honestly I wasn't sure it was ever going to happen. So we've got Batman V. Superman and Suicide Squad in 2016, Wonder Woman and Justice League in 2017, The Flash and Aquaman in 2018, Shazam and Justice League 2 in 2019 and Cyborg and Green Lantern in 2020. These next five years might be the best five years of my life and I'm not ashamed to say that the prospect of getting my superheroes on the big screen is way better than anything that I may have considered happiness to this point in my entire life.......... Okay I'm a little ashamed. But with all these big announcements we have the problem of casting the flicks and people like me either bitching or praising the choices made for people to play my favorite characters. So here I figure we'll look at what Jim and I consider the best choices for a few characters and even say "fuck you" to some of the choices already made and show you our choices instead. So let's check out the Top 5 Actors We Want To Play DC Characters.
#5. Billy Zane as Lex Luthor
Look at that mug up there. Billy Zane is fucking perfect for the role of Lex Luthor and it drives me crazy knowing that he'll never be. I know the hip fun thing for filmmakers now a days is to take a beloved character and put their own spin on it because....... Well all I got is because they're assholes, but I don't know if that's accurate on why they do it, but I'm a bit of a stickler and when I look at somebody that's supposed to be playing a beloved character of mine and they just don't look right. Well I do what every fanboy does, I go to the interwebs with my distain. Billy Zane would never have that problem with me, if casting directors would just call up Billy and say "Hey we want you to play a bald bad guy....... Oh that's your thing? Excellent!" Billy Zane first came to my attention back in 1995 when he starred as the villain in the film Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight and even my twelve year old self said then, "that mother fucker look like Lex Luthor." Yeah I was a little foul mouthed bastard, but that doesn't matter. So even though a lot of you out there are like I'll give Jesse Eisenberg a chance and see how he does before I judge him. Lex Luthor will always be played by Billy Zane in my heart.
#4. Jason Momoa as Lobo
See I don't even think I really have to say anything here. Just look at that dude and tell me you don't immediately see Lobo. Well I guess someone over at DC Entertainment or Warner Bros. or whoever is in charge of casting looked at him and said "Eureka! We've found our Aquaman!" I seriously don't get how Jason Momoa could seriously be cast as Aquaman and not our main man. Like Billy Zane before him, there I was watching television about five years ago when I started watching Stargate: Atlantis and when the show introduced Jason Momoa as a new character named Ronon Dex, I sat up in my seat and said "That mother fucker looks like Lobo." Yeah I'm still foul mouthed now, but again that doesn't matter. It's not like there would be a lot of make up work to this character and I'd be surprised if Jason didn't already go to a Halloween party dressed as the character. Just a little make up and a bad ass attitude..........Done. So yeah I would totally recast Jason Momoa as Lobo and tell him to stay away from Aquaman.
#3. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Aquaman
Since we were talking about getting Jason Momoa out of the Aquaman spot, I figured we'd look at the person that I would totally love as our underwater hero. Now honestly I didn't know what this actor's name was before I had to look him up for this list and it never mattered because normally I just call him Jaime Lannister, but the second I saw him banging his sister in Game of Thrones I knew I saw a man that I wanted to play the King of Atlantis. Well maybe not for that reason, but you have to admit when you look at him he fits the bill for the character pretty well. I've had this conversation with people at comic shops and they tell me that he's too old to play the character and they may be right, but what are movies if not devices to lie? A little CGI, a little make up and dude who I can't pronounce his name is ten to fifteen years younger looking.......... and sports a trident. So yeah Momoa out of the throne of Atlantis and Nikolaj takes his place. My DC Cinematic Universe is really taking shape.
#2. Matt Bomer as Nightwing
The age thing might be something that people would bring up when saying why Matt Bomer shouldn't play Dick Grayson and his alter ego Nightwing, but the hell with all of you because I really think that he's perfect for the role and I could make the same CGI, make up argument here and added to that is the fact that this dude has a young face. Just like everyone else on this list so far, there I was sitting around watching television when I figured I'd give USA's new show White Collar a chance and the second this dude started talking and playing it cool, I knew that he'd be the perfect Nightwing. Hell even Matt Bomer himself has expressed interest in playing the character and I don't understand why DC and or Warner Bros. isn't just foaming at the mouth when looking at this guy to play the former Robin. Maybe I'm just naive on how the whole process works, or maybe they are secretly against me and have sworn to never make me happy. Yeah, that's probably it. Bring Matt Bomer into the Cinematic Universe and hear fans go wild over the casting..... Do it.
#1. Chris Pine or Josh Duhamel as Green Lantern
Like many others out there I was horribly and deeply offended by what we got as our Green Lantern movie and I want to call a mulligan. Even though I have to wait the better part of six years to get what I want, at least I'm getting it. Ryan Reynolds never came across to me as Hal Jordan and that for me completely ruined the movie from the get go. When I can't even believe the main character is who he says he is, then how am I supposed to enjoy the flick, especially when it's one of my all time favorite characters? So anyway the reason there are two actors for this spot is that Jim and I couldn't come together with one person. He wants Chris Pine and while I was originally on board with that, my choice switched to Josh Duhamel for his looks and the way his character from Transformers felt like more of a Hal Jordan that Ryan Reynolds entire performance did in the Green Lantern flick. So who do you think would play a better Hal Jordan? Jim's choice or mine? Or am I completely off base here and you think you have the all time best actor to play the warrior of will? Oh and no Nathan Fillion. Even though he has the perfect voice for the character and we all love him in the DC animated movies......... and well just love him, he really doesn't have the body type anymore to be playing the character. No matter what happens and whoever they might cast with the exception of giving Ryan Reynolds a do over, I'm just happy that this film will be rebooted and be given a second chance to put the Green Lantern in the mainstream world and hopefully this time it will stick.
That's it for this week's Top 5 Fridays and whether you agree with my choices of actors or think I'm completely wrong, I hope you enjoyed the list. Like always if you think you have a better choice for something, leave it in the comment section and if you want to point me in the direction of a should be actor for whatever role, leave that too. I hope you have a wonderful weekend as you sit around and daydream about what these movies will be like and I'll see you in seven. Boosh!
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Are you going to do a separate one for actresses? If not, I'd say Yvonne Strahovski as Black Canary. Yeah, that'd be a bit of typecasting, but so what?
