So Long and Thanks for Nothing

Let me start this review with a little secret.  I wanted to love Birds of Prey.  I wanted this to be my book that everyone hated, but somehow I loved.  Then I could go around telling people that they just didn't understand the dense story lines and layers that only true Birds of Prey lovers recognize.  Yea, I'm one of those guys.  Well, it didn't quite work out.  The book sucked.  Yes, I kept reading it hoping it would become good, but now the wait is over.  Not because it finally got better, but because it was canceled.  This is the last issue and it's about time.  How it lasted this long is ridiculous.  If you need an example of how bad Birds of Prey is, pick up this issue. Better yet, just take my word for it and forget this run ever happened.  We'd all be better off.

It's Birds of Prey versus the Suicide Squad somewhere in Africa.  That sounds so cool.  It's not.  The action is tame and the dialogue is cringe worthy.  I understand that Christy Marx doesn't write the Suicide Squad, but she writes the Birds of Prey and they are just as guilty.  At least Strix doesn't say anything stupid.  That's a joke for the two other people who read this book.

The bulk of the issue involved Black Canary and Amanda Waller arguing over Kurt Lance.  It goes on too long and barley makes sense. Seriously, the argument and explanations seem to change each time one of them open their mouths.  I did laugh, though, when I realized this issue featured three canceled books...the old Suicide Squad, Team 7 and now the Birds of Prey.  There's a recipe for success.

Robson Rocha's art had been getting better with each issue, but I wonder if he just mailed this one in.  It's not very good in general and the action scenes are hard to follow.  King Shark's size is inconsistent and other characters seem to change ages throughout the issue.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue sucked.  This series sucked.  Good Riddance.

1.5/10

  1. Definitely was the writers' fault that this book was turned into a big nasty sticky mess but do you think that character roster selection had to do with failure and if so who do you think was the worst of them Katana, Poison Ivy, Starling, Condor or Strix? My favourite is Condor I hope I don't get lapidated for that!

    1. I liked Strix, but hated Katana and Condor (I'm sorry). It wasn't the character per se, but how he was written as a lost puppy trying to get Black Canary to love him. It drove me crazy.

    2. It's ok but you made me come to the realization I'm attracted to half-assed ever rejected guys and native ones as well. Black Canary should play good wife and stick with Kurt.

    3. I did get a degree in Psychology...at West Virginia, so I'm not sure it really counts for much! I hope Black Canary (and Us) can just forget about this book and in a better World, Black Canary and Kurt are happy together.
