Dark Night for the...
With Zero Year just ending and the Futures End Event coming up in weeks, Batman (the book) takes a little break with a one-shot by Gerry Duggan and Matteo Scalera. Taking a break doesn't mean that this issue is not important because it feels like it has some weight to it. It's also really dark and damn good. I hate to say it, but it's also nice for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo to get a break too. They've been working hard for a while and we don't want them getting burned out now do we? Batman (the hero) doesn't rest, so while Snyder and Capullo are off on some tropical island, the book is in good hands.
Batman is a little pissed off at himself. There's a serial killer loose in Gotham and he's been operating right under the Dark Knight's nose. I'll give Batman a little break, he's been pretty busy and he's looking for someone who wants to stay hidden. A Gotham Villain who doesn't want attention? What is he, crazy? Yes. Yes he is.
Matteo Scalera does a good job showing the detective side of Batman. It's dark and moody like an old time noir story and I really enjoyed it. Because of the story, the Killer is still a bit of a mystery, but Batman is shining a spotlight on him and the ending is just beginning to show the horrors he committed. Plus, a certain other villain may not too pleased after what Batman does. It really seems like Batman has a larger plan in mind. I hope so.
I really liked Matteo Scalera's art. It fits the moody atmosphere of the story so well. Whenever Capullo wants to take another break, I hope they give Scalera a call.
Bits and Pieces:
Batman #34 is a one-shot snuggled in between Zero Year and Futures End. Don't write it off, though, because Gerry Duggan and Matteo Scalera do a good job of telling a moody detective story that feels important. I really enjoyed it and recommend it.
