Setting Sail

All Star Western has been one of my favorite books in the New 52.  Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and Jonah Hex have traveled the dusty trail, the future and beyond for over a hundred issues and this month it comes to an end.  It's a real shame because this book was so unique and fun and I'm not sure if anything out there will be able to fill the void.  We do get this final issue and I couldn't have asked for much more.  Palmiotti and Gray tie everything up perfectly while Darwyn Cooke makes everything look like an animated feature I now desperately want.  I never wanted to see this book end, but I love the way it did.

There is someone waltzing around pretending to be Jonah Hex.  So, the real Jonah has a decision to make.  Deal with the impostor or walk away and live a nice quiet life.  Of course, Jonah doesn't do quiet and decides on the former. This all ties into the handful of issues where Jonah traveled into the future.  He's seen what happens to Jonah Hex and now he's going to make damn sure it comes true.  I have to admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the time traveling story line, but Palmiotti and Gray have changed my mind a bit.  The pieces all fit together so well here.

Jonah and Tallulah Black confront the fake Jonah and it's great.  More pieces come together and while I would have loved to find out more about the phony, it ends perfectly.  Jonah and Tallulah get to ride off into the sunset together, ready for more adventures.  These two can't just fade away, so I hope we see them both very soon.

Darwyn Cooke's art is so good.  I was worried the cartoony look wouldn't fit with the story, but man was I wrong.  I loved every bit of it.

Bits and Pieces:

All Star Western #34 is such a great end to a great run.  Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray tie everything up and send Jonah Hex off with style.  I will miss this book so much, but at least fans got such a great finale.  Come back soon, Jonah.

9.5/10
