Heroes and Villains

Okay, I've ripped this book a bit in the past few weeks.  While others may be judging it as a video game tie-in first, I am looking at it strictly as a comic book.  I don't play the game and I never will.  I know I sound like a dick, but it's the truth.  The first nine issues served as a primer to the series.  They were inconsistent and ended with a "now let's get to the real story" type of ending.  I cried shenanigans and almost stopped reading the series then and there.  As you can see, though,  I'm back.  I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment...or am I?

This issue marks the return of The Flash, Zatanna and Cyborg.  Their appearance in issue #4 was my favorite of the series, but since then, they fell off my radar.  They're back and so is my hope for the future of this series.  If I was a betting man, I'd wager that this is the team Dan Abnett enjoys writing.  The banter between the three is so much fun and way above anything that Team Batman (except Sir Harold who was great) gave us for all those past chapters.  I would be happy to see this trio for a long stretch of issues.

Characters aside, the major appeal of this book is where the heroes end up and who they find.  This issue we get a trip to Earth-44 and meet Mecha Superman and Doomsday.  I'd love to say that it's cool, but it's all setup and falls a bit flat.

I know this will sound goofy, but nothing in this book feels "real".  There is no weight to the actions and seemingly no consequences to the character's decisions.  Maybe with a little more story and character development that will change.  I really hope so.

Tom Derenick's art is really good.  The characters are spot-on with a good amount of detail.  The highlight is a full spread that is the best in the series so far.  I also loved Stjepan Sejic's cover.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue is a step in the right direction.  I love the team of The Flash, Cyborg and Zatanna and while Dan Abnett teased some great action, all we get this week is setup.  Tom Denerick's art is really good and he gives us the highlight page of the series so far.  I will keep reading this book, but I can't recommend it just yet.

6.8/10
