Not Everything is Doomed
This is a Doomed issue, but also a Superman/Wonder Woman issue as well. I know what you're thinking, "No shit Sherlock, of course it's both." First off, my name is Jim, not Sherlock, though Sherlock is a pretty cool name. Second, shut up and listen to me.
Charles Soule does a really good job of showing us the struggle Superman is going through trying to contain Doomsday. It's a schizophrenic storytelling technique with Superman and Doomsday debating, ridiculing and trumping each other. What's great is that I'm not really sure who is winning.
We also get to see Superman's support network in action. We get the obvious (Wonder Woman), but we also get some very interesting and unexpected allies. It really sets up Doomed as a more expansive story, but also reveals and expands the Superman/Wonder Woman story.
That's what I was talking about in the beginning before you called me Sherlock. Charles Soule shows us who broke the Superman and Wonder Woman dating story. I won't lie and tell you I was floored by the revelation, but it was nice to know. What I did like was seeing how much Wonder Woman loves Superman, but even greater was seeing the Man of Steel returning the feelings. There's a bit at the end that shows what Superman is fighting for and it's a touching scene that calls back to the very beginning of the series. It seems that Superman needed to fight for his life to see how special his relationship with Diana really is.
This book ends up being a good Doomed chapter and a really good Superman/Wonder Woman issue. I can't wait to see how Superman's new allies help, but also can't wait until the Doomed story is over to get back to just Superman and Wonder Woman.
Tony S. Daniel's art has been so good in this book and it continues this month. The Doomsday Superman looks awesome, but so does everything else, especially the "Red" guest stars.
Bits and Pieces:
Superman/Wonder Woman #9 does a good job of being both a good Doomed chapter and Superman/Wonder Woman issue. A couple new allies enter the battle against Superman as he fights the monster inside of him. Charles Soule has me looking forward to both stories and Tony S. Daniel does a fine job of making everything look great. Recommended.
8.5/10
