Family Matters
When we last stepped into Eternia, we traveled a thousand years into the past and witnessed the victory of King Grayskull over the evil Hordak. But victory would be short lived, when King Hiss in the guise of a trusted "Gar" adviser creates a coup against King Grayskull. The issue culminated in the "Gar" uprising where they burned the kingdom and murdered it's people, and King Grayskull's trusted handmaiden Saryn slit the throat of her king and loved father figure. It was an amazing issue, and if you haven't checked it out yet, make sure you do. With the knowledge of the past, let's jump to the present and find out the secret origin of She-Ra The Princess of Power.
Explain It!:
After her involvement in Hordak's invasion Adora has put herself into permanent exile to atone for her actions. But Adora has been having vivid dreams out in the wild. Dreams of the past where she's being chased through the forests of an ancient forbidden island known as Anwat-Gar. In these dreams she's also the handmaiden Sayrin who has been trying to escape her guilt for betraying her beloved King, so you can see that these two already have a lot in common. Whether these demons chasing Saryn in the dream are real or just manifestations of her guilt are unknown, but whatever is connecting these two throughout time, Adora plans on finding out the answers by traveling to the forbidden isle of Anwat-Gar.
It doesn't look like she'll have to travel alone though because He-Man and Battle Cat have found her with the aid of the new Sorceress Teela. But being a travel companion isn't He-Man's only reason to find his sister. He also wants to relay the news that their father King Randor has been killed, and the duties of leading the people of Eternia fall onto them both. Adora at first doesn't want to hear any of this, but you know He-Man can be the convincing sort so don't think she'll continue to be a loner forever. Like I said He-Man plans on traveling with his sister and Teela has sent a message and a gift with him to give to Adora. The message is simply let He-Man tag along and help protect you, but the gift is a odd choice. It seems that Teela has sent her the blade that Saryn killed King Grayskull with, so I don't know what Teela's playing at here, but I don't like it.
So the two are off to get some answers at Anwat-Gar, and this might be my one gripe with the issue. There isn't a transition to let you know that Adora and He-Man have actually started their journey. Adora admires the blade and then the next page they're being attacked by a Horde Patrol. It's not a big problem, but I was certainly confused for a bit. The two fight Horde Patrol after Horde Patrol, and finally decide that they need to steal a ship to get out of Horde Territory, but the closest port town is already under Hordak's control and has been converted into one of his Fright Zones. Yeah I remember the toy, and this would of been so much cooler. It just needs more slime.
In the end He-Man and Adora look on at the Fright Zone and think that this shouldn't be too difficult a task, but what they don't know is that something is monitoring them. That's it for now as we journey towards the origin of She-Ra, and all the adventure it will bring. Make sure you're back next month to get all the Eternia action you crave as much as I do.
Bits and Pieces:
This is a great beginning to the story we've been waiting for, and with the events of King Grayskull's death colliding with the present, we're sure to see some epic storytelling in the world of Eternia. I don't know if I'm just a awful fanboy of He-Man or if this creative team just speaks to all of us who grew up and loved this character since we were children, and who have taken pain staking care to make sure that we're all happy with an adult vision to the stories we want told. Yeah that's really what we get here, and you need to check this out and continue reading He-Man and The Masters of The Universe.
