Gumm Up the Works
I love Batman '66. I love Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman and I love Ty Templeton. So, it was with a heavy heart that I had to give Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet #1 a low score. When all was said and done, I just didn't enjoy it. It didn't have the fun factor I expected from the combination of the campy source material and two guys that never fail to make me laugh. I did enjoy Ty Templeton's art, but that is pretty much a given when he does this book. This issue was an improvement, but it still felt flat. Heavy heart time once again.
This issue is basically the backstory of General Gumm. Yes, we get to see why he looks the way he does and it has nothing to do with trademarks and actor likenesses. The truth actually makes it more fun, but the actual story lets the air out of it a bit. It's pretty boring.
Unfortunately, that's what this series has been so far. Batman '66 and boring should never hang out in the same sentence, but here they bunk together for a whole issue. Yes, we get some more action this week and while I like the motion comic aspect of it, it's a ho-hum affair. I usually judge this book on whether it would make a good episode of the show and I just don't see it here. I'm not sure if it's Ralph Garman's love of the material not letting him cut loose or a slow burn of a more lengthy Batman '66 story, but if things don't improve quickly, I'm out.
I mentioned at the beginning that Ty Templeton's art is a given and I stick with that statement. His art is the highlight of the book and everything looks fun and dynamic even when it's not. I especially love his Kato.
Bits and Pieces:
We are two issues in and I'm already pretty bored. I love Ty Templeton's art, but Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman's story hasn't impressed me. It's just not fun. I hope it turns around quick or I will just get my Batman '66 fix in the consistently good regular run of the book.
6.2/10
