God, What an Issue

Do you like puzzles?  I don't.  I actually hate them.  I don't have the patience to work through them and get to the end.  Also, my Mom used to get me ones of hot air balloons or kittens and who wants to do those? Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman has been a puzzle since the start of the New 52.  Each month he'd give readers a couple more pieces and while some didn't seem to fit at the time, the big picture is beginning to show itself.  Thankfully it isn't a bunch of kittens with yarn.  Finally, a puzzle I love.

Last issue Apollo blew up himself and Olympus.  Insert explosion pun here ie: Pretty explosive ending or That seemed to heat things up a bit. Well, the First Born survived and he is pretty pissed off.  Luckily for him, the rest of the Pantheon has arrived on the wreckage just in time for him to threaten, torture and suck the life out of.  He is a badass and he knows it. After reading this issue, you'll know it too.

Just when it looks like Wonder Woman is done for, the gods are transported to Paradise Island where an army of Amazons waits for battle.  How they get there is so good, but also a little heartbreaking for longtime readers.  I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just say a certain god is back to normal, but I loved them even more as a mortal.  I'd like to know what you guys think.  The book ends with a scene that's so long overdue it made me fist pump.  The War for Olympus is finally upon us and it looks like the wait was well worth it. It's that good.

The whole book is that good.  Brian Azzarello recently announced that he is stepping away from the book this Summer and you can tell he wants to go out with a bang.  Everything he's laid out is starting to pay off in a big way.

Cliff Chiang is one of the best artists in comics and he shows why this month.  The art is spectacular.  Jaw dropping, wet your pants spectacular.  If you want definitive proof, just open to the last page.  No tricks needed, just plain old awesome art.

Bits and Pieces:

It's no mistake that Wonder Woman has been one of the New 52s shining lights.  Azzerello and Chiang are so good and everything they have given us in past issues is beginning to pay off.  if this is any indication of how their run will end, it will go down as the definitive Wonder Woman for years to come.  It is that good.

9.5/10
