Superman/Wonder Woman #6 Review

Three Mile...WTF?!

Zod an Faora work to open the Phantom Zone, but Hephaestus has given Superman and Wonder Woman a secret weapon.  The battle turns in favor of the heroes, but we see how fickle gods can be. Round two ultimately goes to the other Kryptonians and Superman and Wonder Woman's relationship gets more explosive then anyone could have imagined.

I love Charles Soule.  Yes, I am a married man with five boys, but I know what I likes and I likes Soule's writing.  When this book was announced I guess I was still reeling from Young Romance, but bit the bullet and decided to review it.  Maybe that was my luckiest day ever because Superman/Wonder Woman has risen to the top of my stack and I can't wait for each issue.

That all being said, I'm a bit torn with this issue.  I loved the back and forth action, the setup for the future, a callback to what I thought was a throw away plot point and the further development of the relationship.  So what didn't I like?  Well, the dialogue between Superman and Wonder Woman is a bit cheesy and this issue suddenly makes Wonder Woman less "kick-ass".  Seriously, last issue Wonder Woman was a one woman wrecking ball.  She was clearly the bigger, badder fighter of the two and seemed like she could take on Zod and Faora alone.  In this issue, Superman becomes her protector again when I really think it should be the other way around.  Also, without spoiling anything, the book takes a sudden leap near the end that is abrupt and unexplained.

Speaking of the end, the issue ends with a huge reveal and then a crazy cliffhanger.  Both are great, but the reveal seems more important while the cliffhanger feels less so since the book takes place in the past.  Still, I can't wait for next month to see where else Soule is taking us.

The real hero of this book is Tony Daniel.  His art is some of the best in the New 52.  The book is great because it combines the worlds of Superman and Wonder Woman and Daniel makes everything work by making everything look just right.

Bits and Pieces:

Superman/Wonder Woman #6 has great action and developments that will ripple through the New 52.  It also has some cheesy dialogue and puts Wonder Woman back two steps in the butt kicking department.  Even with that said, Soule and Daniel continue giving us one of the best books on the shelves.  Read it now.

8.5/10
