Otis to the Rescue
I mentioned in my review for last weeks issue that it was the calm before the storm. Well put on your raincoats and galoshes because the storm has arrived and it's hitting hard. Like Hannibal Smith, I love it when a plan comes together and if Bryan Q. Miller's plan is to entertain the reader then yes, the plan is definitely coming together.
He gives us Batman versus Batman with such a great twist. The action is incredible, but it's the back and forth between them that makes the scene. Then there is the reveal. Writers walk a fine line when it comes to alternate Earth stories, but Miller does it without a net. It's not just the twist that's awesome, but the little details around it.
Next we have Superman and Lex in Russia facing the Monitor. Again, Miller gives us action, but also a great look at what makes Superman and Lex so different. They both want the same thing, to save Earth, but man they have radically different ideas on how to do it.
As Superman does what he does, Miller gives us the real hero of the book...Otis. The guy has Lex's back and doesn't let him down, literally. Again, it's these things that make Miller such a great writer.
This is not the last chapter, but as this issue ends I am really left wondering what Miller has in store next week. If it involves Otis in a Star Wars-esque award cewremony, I'm in.
Edgar Salazar's art is great as usual. The Batman bits are the best in the book and Salazar's art keeps pace with the furious action and then some. Everything else is really good, but that scene kicks major rump.
Bits and Pieces:
Smallville: Alien continues the great story with an action packed chapter 11. Bryan Q, Miller gives us a hell of a ride with Batman versus Batman, Superman versus the Monitor and a flying Otis saving the day. Go buy this book.
9.5/10
