Reunion
Kyle Higgins just wrapped up a great story of redemption, past mistakes and second chances. If you haven't read it yet, go right now and do so before I slap you upside your head. This issue is a self contained epilogue featuring Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon and if you have any interest in either character it's a must read.
Everyone knows that Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon are meant for each other. Just like Screech and Lisa Turtle, Dawson and Joey and Kevin and Winnie. Unfortunately, things don't always work out the way we wish. That is how things are in the Batman Beyond 2.0 Universe. Dick and Barbara are not together. It sucks for us, but it's awkward for them, having to work together and all. Dick takes Terry's advice and asks Barbara to dinner to try to get their relationship back on friendly terms.
That's where the issue jumps into the must read category. Higgins gives us flashbacks of their history together. Robin and Batgirl, Nightwing and Flash (my favorite) and a heartbreaking Dick and Barbara. It's a tale of puppy love, missed opportunity and a friendship that should last forever. I say "should" because they haven't been on the best of terms recently. Their dinner is a step in the right direction towards rekindling their friendship at least. The issue ends with a great little quote by Terry that ties the whole issue together and tugs at your heart realizing what should of happened but never will.
Eric Wight handles the art in this issue and it's pretty good. I really love his flashback scenes, but the modern day stuff seems a little wonky at points. However, overall it's a good job.
Bits and Pieces:
Kyle Higgins gives Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon fans a treat this week. Everyone knows they should be together, but in the Beyond 2.0 Universe it wasn't meant to be. However, this issue at least sets them back on the path of friendship. It's great. Heartbreaking and great.
9.3/10
I felt that is Batman Beyond 2.0 would have continue, Kyle Higgins (as a Dick/Barbara fan) would have eventually have them together; like Barbara said in the series, it was easy to fall right back. But I heard that DC wouldn't allowed Higgins to do many things, but I felt that he gave out hints, especially with #40 "the end...for now!"
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with you, beautiful and heartbreaking.
I loved this series so much! I wish that DC would grab Higgins back and let him continue it. It has been way too long!
Delete"Everyone knows they should be together, but in the Beyond 2.0 Universe it wasn't meant to be."
ReplyDeleteTo me is more like they are meant to be together but never got the chance to. But they're partnership/friendship to me is just as meaningful because it shows that they do mean a lot to one another and do need each other. From what they have been through, it is not too late.
