Only Child part 3 of 3
I have really enjoyed the first two issues of the Only Child three part story from Ron Marz and Doc Shaner for it's look at Superman as not just a super powered god, but as a person. A person who, although surrounded by people who love him, still has a bit of him that's lonely. When Earth was visited by an "Iron Giant" from Krypton, it seemed to fill an empty place in Superman's heart. However, at the end of last issue, it is revealed the robot was a scout for a warlike alien race and they have arrived to take planet Earth for themselves.
This story and issue in particular was good for two reasons, great storytelling and superb art. No need for crazy twists or fancy page layouts. Nope, just good old fashioned comic book goodness. In fact, I pretty much figured out the story after the first issue, but guess what? It didn't matter. In fact, I may have liked it better that way. It reminded me of a story I would have read under my covers with a flashlight. No gimmicks needed. I also liked it because the ending wasn't particularly happy. Because of who he is, Superman will always be a bit alone, but it's better to love and lost...
Doc Shaner's art keeps pace and then some. Again, no gimmicks needed. The clean, classic style fits the man of steel and everything looks great. The action scenes are great, but I was really impressed with the character work, especially Superman and the Kryptonian Robot. I really want to keep calling him the Iron Giant and I mean that as a compliment.
Bits and Pieces:
Adventures of Superman #45 is the conclusion to Ron Marz and Doc Shaner's Only Child story and it really good. It is just good old fashioned storytelling and art and I loved it for just that. The story is touching and I recommend it highly. This type of arc is why I really love the Adventures of Superman.
