Double Teaming Blight. Yeah I Said It.
In the last chapter of Forever Evil: Blight we saw Pandora become the host of the light within all of us.
Which you'd think would be a formidable opponent against Blight, but it seems to be a stale mate. I'm just going to get this out of the way right here so I don't have to bring it up again. As awesome as it was that Pandora became this force of light, it's gone now, and we're not going to see it again. So it's back to square one with the fight against Blight. Well less than square one because Blight killed Phantom Stranger last issue, and as we start this one we find out Blight killed Pandora as well. So hopefully our favorite Dark team can get their shit together and finish the job. Let's find out.
Explain It!:
We start this issue with Zauriel going ape-shit on Blight, but all that gets him is being swallowed by the essence of all evil. So we're three members down, and Constantine and Nightmare Nurse decide that they only have one chance left. They execute a spell that is the darkest of the dark magics. It transforms the two into all the darkness they have within them, and unleashes it at their target. So John and Asa become terrifying monsters, and it's awesome.
But during this transformation, we see that Phantom Stranger, Pandora and Zauriel are actually alive and inside the collective unconscious. On the physical plane Blight is at the heart of his host Chris Esperanza, but within the collective unconscious Chris is at the heart of Blight, now that our heroes are inside Blight they might have a chance of reaching him. At least that's the initial plan. But that's put aside because Zauriel knows something that we don't. Remember that scene in the last episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, where Buffy tells Angel she's like cookie dough and not done baking yet, but one day she'll be ready to be who she is, delicious cookie Buffy? If you don't it's okay, I just like talking about Buffy. But basically Zauriel tells Pandora, and the Stranger that Chris isn't ready yet, but they'll know what to do when the time comes. Why do angels have to be so cryptic all the time? The skinny of it is that Pandora, and the Stranger begin to channel all the good in people, all over the world, to help reach Chris.
Back on the physical plane, the monsters formerly known as Constantine, and Nightmare Nurse are tearing the hell out of Blight. But even in these pure dark forms, Nightmare Nurse finds the will to stop from killing Blight's host, and she ends the spell. So all seems lost now that they've decided not to kill Chris because he is innocent in all of this. But BOOM! Phantom Stranger, and Pandora finally reach Chris in the heart of Blight, and Chris awakens as the embodied spirit of redemption. So God's divine was to take this kid, make him evil, and only then be able to know evil, and heal it. God's funny that way. So just like that Blight is put back into his box (figuratively not literally), and all is well in the world. In the end now that Blight's gone, Constantine finally knows where Zatanna is. Remember that big machine the Crime Syndicate were building using mages as the batteries? Well it was touched upon here and there, but that's where Zatanna is, so I guess we can assume we'll see a rescue mission in the next installment of Forever Evil: Blight, in Phantom Stranger #16. See you there.
Bits and Pieces:
This is an enjoyable book, and gives you the conclusion to the monster known as Blight, if they don't pull a switcheroo on us that is. The story still continues so don't worry about this being the final chapter. DeMatties has easily become one of my favorite writers since this story line started, and I can't get enough of the way he portrays these Dark characters. The only real gripe I have is I would of liked to have seen more of Pandora being the embodiment of light, as we saw her in her last issue. It seems like that was just a throwaway idea. But I love this new JLD, and I really want this team to continue, but I rarely get what I want, but we'll see. So run on out to your comic shop, and get yourself a copy.
